MAROKOPA MAIL SERVICE.
(to ths editor.) Sib,—ln your last i-*sue I read the copy of a petition that has forwarded t > the Postmaster - Gantral through Mr Greenslada, M.P., asking that the postal service as ac present carried between Kawhia and Marokopa and Kiritehere be abolished in favour of one through to Te Kuiti. The petition is signed by 50 people wbo desire tbe change. To suggest this new phase caused me consternation and astonishment is putting it mildly. To say tbe contentions as set forth in tha petition are unreliable is unnecessary, as all who have any idea of the proposed new route know full well the service could not possibly serve as well as the present one. The only possible suggestion that could be used with any degree of success would be that instead of taking the mail over the Potaka would be to take it through Te Angs. The route as outlined in the petition u so very absurd that it makes one wonder how many of the fifty signatore knew what they were signing and also what tbe promoters really have ia their minds eye. It is very patent tbe petition is not an ern’xodiment with its own boundaries. It is hardly likely the department will carry out the requests contained, without making fall enquiries and investigation will not require to be very scathing to show tbe absurdity of the proposal. With this contingency it is hardly perhaps worth while discussing the matter, but what would be interesting reading would be tbe bare unvarnished truth aa to the relative positions of the Marokopa and Kiritehere people and those who recide within the Kawhia County area. I have read your valuable paper with great interest during the period I have been a ratepayer in this County, and have noted all the reports, correspondence, etc , that have appeared in reference to the telephone to Marokopa. As a unit ou tbe County rate roll I was very pleased to note that although the Marokopa telephone was to serve settlers outside the County boundaries ths County Council were not too parochial to assist. I must certainly canto, dec the Council did their duty in this respect —all things being equal, but now I do not know what to think. Are our Awakino friends * miking wbat use they can of us without that true instiuoi of good fallow ship that should exist ? Are they working points of a clandestine nature ? Or are they unwittingly laying themselves open to scepticism and at the sama time being directed by the essence of integrity. I do not now even wish to throw cold water on the proposed telspnous, but what I wish is that if hot too Ute the C unty Council will ascertain wbather or not they are, under the circumstances using ratepayers’ money legitimately. This is a query and one that can only be answered by “ that fif y.” I must apologise for trespassso mucb on your space, and would like to explain that my exon*® must be the extraordinary circumstances on which my letter is ba sen.—Yours, etc., SINAPISM.
