Festivities at Kawhia
On Friday night luat, ths muchtalked of Leap Year Ball came off, aud was in every way a success. Toe attendance was large, and the dancing was thoroughly euj jyed by all. For the occasion the hall had been decorated with flags, etc., and looked very pretty. The music was, as usual of the best, it being supplied by Mesdames Langley, Miss Stevens, Miss Godsell, Miss Treanor (piano), Mr Jonathan (’cello) and Mr Aubin (violin). The catering was in the hands of Messrs M'Donaid and Owen, whilst Misses G. Cowell and L. Forbes officiated as M’s.C. in a manner pleasing io everybody, The gathering terminated at the late (for Kawhia) hour of 4 a.m.
A waltzing competition (for which nine couples entered) was decided in favour of Miss Falwasser and Mr Nathan and Miss G. Langley and Mr H. Taui. The judges fotf tho event were Mesdames Grey, Morgan, M'OarM'Carthy, Newton and Galvan.
To say that Friday night’s event was very enjoyable is correct, but it was overshadowed on the following evening, when a Childrens’ Plain and Fancy Dress ball was held. The attendance was very large, it being c imputed that there were fully 250 persons present. And what a pretty sight it was to see all the young ones, arrayed in unique and striking costumes, taking part in a march or dance. The ladies who deserve praise for the success of the event are Mesdames Newton and Morgan, who worked very bard, they being ably assisted by Misses G. Cowell aqd M. Treanor, Miss Cowell also being M.C., though, as she was attired in a military costume, the children quickly termed her “Tbe General.” These two young ladies also spent of time in teaching the juveniles a very pretty march which was gone through correctly, the effect being splendid, The children had a gay time, more particularly with Old Black Joe and Uncle Tom, who afforded them a lot of fun, The music was supplied by Mrs Chase, who played throughout. Ttie supper wos appreciated, being provided by the ladies. A girls waltzing competition was held the prizes being .won ,by Misses T, Morgan and T. Langley E Falwasser and E. Langley second and Maud Falwasser and D. Langley were thirp. Misses Newton, Hayes, and Ashby were the judges. Each child received a prize, tbe distribution of which was a subject of much merriment.
