Amongst the list of Justices of the Peace lately published we are pleased to notice the names of Messrs W. J. Shaw and E. G. Stanley, of Kinohaku. The football match, Marokopa v Oparau and Kawhia combined, arranged for Saturday lust, did not eventuate, the last named being unable to travel that distance.
Wo have received threa lengthy letters from Mr Harry Derecourt re the Marokopa telephone, but owi.-g to the fact that tho matter has now been settled we cannot p tblish them. The Hon. W. W. M'Cardle, M.L.Cwill represent the Kawbii Harbour Railway League at the Auckland Rail way leagues* annual meeting to be held at 3 pan. on Monday 22nd. The s.s. Raglan is up in arms because the Premier did not visit there. Fancy a Raglan deputation having to go to Te Te Kuiti to air the district’s wants ! And the Premier came to Kawhia and did not visit Raglan 1 Kawhia still leads.
We are glad to note the fact that at the last meeting of the Kawhia County Council a sum of £5O was voted to Ch 'irman Shaw to recompense him fin some measure) for the expenses incurred in attending to the duties neccessary to the position.
The paragraph in the Settler some weeks ago stating that Mr W. Edwards who injured his eye would regain the tight, in unfortunately not likely to prove correct, as we now learn that the pupil is permanently damaged, but that the other eye is not interfered with at all. •
Another Spring (or would it not be more correct to say winter ?) poet has sent us a contribution entitled “Darling downs.” The lines are beautiful and touching but we must protect our reader? ior the present, as the visit of Premier is of slightly more importance. However, anon.
The Raglan County Chronicle says that Mr Charles King, who has recently been lining in Kawhia, hits acquired a lease of the block of native ’ land known as R&kaunui, and intends building on the property. Mr King has already made arrangements for putting down in grass, and erecting of other improvements on the land. At the last meeting of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce a letter was received from Mr T. B. Scott, of Opa rau, with reference to the opening of the road to Kawhia through the Moe* rangi block, asking that the chamber should do all in its power to further the matter, and promising to use hie endeavours in this direction at hie end. —lt was pointed out that the question of the acquisition of this block was hung up pending a sitting of the Native "Land Court, but the matter would not be lost sight of.
“The Kawhia County has received a shock by being asked to pay its con tri bution to the Waikato Hospital, though it is only the nominal sum of £l4O. Next year, Waitomo County will undoubtedly be included, and perhaps fairer valuations will make the contributions more equitable. At present this county is being taxed on all the Native land buc apparently Kawhii managed to leave the Native land out.” Thus the Raglan Chronicle.— We do wish people who quote from the Settler would quote correctly. Kawhia did not manage to leave the native laud out, which fact was taken ex cepiion to when the matter came up for discussion.
It i? with deep regret wo record the serious illness of Mrs P. J. M'Carthy, of Kawhia. The lady named was pre sent at the Leap Year Bail on Friday night last, apparently as well as possible, but before it was emu;she had to go to her house, where she became worse on Saturday and Sunday. Mrs M'Cartby suffered groat agony, and on Monday Dr C. Campbell Jenkins, who bad been attending the sufferer, diagonised the case as appendicitis, and recommended that another doctor be called in. Accordingly Dr Wilkin, of Hamilton, was sent for and arrived in Kawhia about 1 80 on Tuesday morn ing. Upon examination it was found that the patient was very low, and it was decided that the only chance of saving bee life was an immediate oper ation, This was done and at 1 a.m. it wisannounced that the operation had be< n highly successful, and there was evt -y chance of Mrs M'Oartby’s re cuvery. At the present moment she is progressing satisfactorily under the care «>f Dr Jenkins, and Nurses Wight mrn and Berg. Mr McCarthy was tbo recipient of deep sympathy during tho anxious time he experienced, and tbo b pe was very general that Mrs i McCarthy would make a speedy and sure recovery,
