Kawhia County Council.
The following items, dealt with at the last meeting of the Kawhia County Council, were crowded out of our last issue : THE WILLOW EVIL. Cr Babbage drew attention to the manner in which the willows were growing in the Awaroa River, more especially near the landing. Something wo Id have to be done to remove them or the launches would bs blocked.
The Chairman said that if the treesi were ring-barked at a certain time of the year they would die. Money would be well spent in dealing with this evil. Permission was given to Cr Babbage to expend up to £5 in removing the willows. LANDINGS. Or Armstrong urged that steps be at once taken to have a landing declared at Oparau. Or Babbage made a similar request for Awaroa
It was decided to do as asked at eash place. HARBOUR ENDOWMENTS. The Chairman reported that he and Cr Babbage inspected the endowment at Easter time, and found the land to be of fair quality, though broken. A dray could be driven to the first two sections from. Hangitiki, and soon there would be a dray road round three sides. He and Cr Babbage thought it would be best to leave the big sections alone, and cut the balance up into holdings of not less than 500 acres.
In answer to ’questions, the Chairman said that the sections would cut up well to the prasent roads ; that no extra raads would be needed ; that the County did not have to make roads.
It was decided to obtain a working plan and the matter of 'arranging the survey was left in the hands of the Chairman and Cr Jonathan, to be proceeded with at once. GENERAL. Cr Babbage asked that a small landing stage be erected at Rakaunui. The present landing place was dangerous. —Councillors agreed that the work was necessary, but that it could not be undertaken just at present. In reply to Ur Babbage, the Clerk said that 4 oods going to Marokopa by the s.s. Rothesay did not pay doable wharfage. It was resolved to apportion the cn« giueec’s salary pro rata from tbo various loana.
On tho suggestion of the Clerk, it was resolved that all accounts, unless certified to by a councillor, must bo in the Clerk’s hands tho day before the meeting.
I’he Chairman, in reply to a question, stated that names on the defaulters' lists but who paid their rates before the ond of Jane, would be on lit* led to vote at tbo election in November as tho roll was made up to that date. On tho suggestion of Cr Jonathan it was decided to obtain maps of the various ridings.
