The County Elections.
In November next the second election for members of tbe Kawhia County Council will take place, as then ail retire by effiuxion of time. There is coueiderab'e talk already over who is to be the representatives next chosen, and from present appearances the election is likely to prove very interesting We believe that tlfcreare to be three candidates for Te Kauri, in place of W. M’Cardle who intends retiring, viz., Messrs F. A. Pearson, J. Noonan and T. Parkinson.
Cr A. W. Babbage is likely to have a walk-over for tbe Awaroa, though be would like to retire iu favour of some of bis aeighbeurs as he considers that three years service is enough, and that others ought to now take his place. But the Awaroa ratepayers are well pleased with Cr Babbage’s represeniation.
It is doubtful if Chairman Shaw will be opposed, as it is recognised in. the Waiharakeke Riding—and it might be stud in the whole of tho county—that he has worked hard in the interests of the ratepayers, and consequently big return even if there is an election is certain.
Cr H. Shaw is emphatic iu bis assertion that Jbe will not again stand for election for Taharoa, but bis successor has not been found, though Mr F. C. Derecourt hag been spoken of. Cr Jonathan the Kawhia representative, is likely to be opposed, Dr C. Campbell Jenkins being mentioned as a probable candidate. Tho Matakowhai Ridin / is peculiarly situated, and last year it was arranged that the few settlers near Te Mata should have a member, i here fore Cr Norton was selected. The balance of voting power is at Oparau, aud we hear that it has been decided to put in two members from that locality, the other arrangement not proving satisfactory to our Oparau friends. Cr Armstrong is to have opposition, the probables being—Messrs Douglas, Mackenzie, Elliott, Davies and Scott. Tbe election should put a little life into County matters.
