Kawhia Harbour Loan.
The following letter, signed “ Disgusted,” appeared in last week’s Bag lan Chronicle :
“Just by chance I heard that a ratepayers’ meeting was to be held at Mr Norton’s (Pakuka) to discuss tbe advisability of a loan to make wharves on the Kawhia harbour. I heard of it at dinner-time the day before tbe meeting was'supposed to take place, and I went to it to try 'and find out whe.t was up. I got there to time, and I certainly had a very quiet meeting, as I was there all by myself, I waited there awhile,*and came back without seeing anybody whatever. If it was the intention'of the Council to put through the loan in the dark and mulct us in a lot of rates for purposes that we have slightest interest in, and that can be of no use to us at any time, as all our shipping is done and is always likely to be done in Raglan, they can congratulate themselves that nobody .in the northern end of the Matakowhai riding has been able to record their protest against it. To advertise a loan in a paper that nobody gets, and omit to advertise it in a i paper that everybody gets, is in my opiniou, rather a low way of carrying your point, and I think it is high time for us in the northern end of the Matakowbai riding to get to work and look for ways and means to get out of the Kawhia County as soon as possible. I wonder bow we will ba treated if the two members cf the riding are elected from the southern end when this is tbe treatment the Kawhia Council give us when we have a member of our own ’?”
