THE MAROKOPA TELEPHONE.

(to the editor ) Sir,—l am pleased to read in th® wJlaat iosue of your paper that I made my meaning clear to those settlers of tbe Awakiuo County, who through not signing guarantees rp they promised have delayed this line so long. Was it fair to me, or honourable on the part of Mr Laurence Armitage and others, to promise tts.eign guarantees, which Mr Armitage now admits they had uo intention of signing ? Had Mr Armitage attended the meeting at the bridge site, be would have known ibat the route agreed upon was Kinobaku to Marokopa Heads, yia To Anga, instead of writing ftuch twaddle as “bad the drawing up ol: the guarantee forma •to-, etc., been left to Mr Roae, more progress would have been made,” No doubt Mr Armitage in writing in this strain wishes to excuseJris own unfair action in tbe matter. Will Mr Armitage kindly inform'mo who’tbe individzal is (who was so like a wise man Dot to sign a guarantee which ib so nn satis factory to we’Awakino settlers) yet so foolish ati.io pay a pound towards the construction of this line. I wonder is same individual who told mo the County Council should take his word without a written guarantee (truly in the face of Mr Armitage’s admissions a''rotten* stick to lean on.) I have to thank Air Armitage for bia information re* meeting at Marokopa heads, at]which be says the telephone line was spoken of merely as aby subject. I believe jMr^Armitage was not at that meeting, which may account, for bis version clashing Bo strangely with information I have received. In conclusion, I think I can leave those interested to judge Mr Armitages’ letter for what itjis worth. I feel there is little satisfaction to be derived from discussing this matter in the paper and trust those settlers most interested will call a meetisg at an early date.and have it put on a more satisfactory footing, when no doubt Mr Armitage and all others interested will attend, and I for my part will be only too pleased to follow Mr Armitage’s suggestion and leave it to’Mr Rose to fix matters te the satisfaction of all and I may bere say that though disheartened with ths whole matter there will at least be no trouble about my gemremtee.—Yours, etc., JOHN SHAW.
