SMOKERS. —A first‘class tobacco is DERBY FLAKE CUT in the new TWO OUNCE TINS. .According to last weeks Government Gazette Wednesday _ has proclaimed the day upon which the half holiday is to be observed jn tho Kawhia County. The Gazette of February an Order-in-Council validating the error in the voting paper in connec-
tion with the Awaroa-Mahoe road loan and the Kawhia loan. The Government primer forwards u 4 a bulletin, issued uttder the auspices ' of the Mini=tar for Agriculture, on “Beo culture”, .the!author being Mr Ishao Hopkins, apiarist, I Word has been received by the County Clerk, that the sum o.' £lOOO,, to be raised by loan has been authdri sed for the work of widening and metalling the Waitetuna-Aotea road.
.Last week Messrs A. Wright and Son landed a now planer, for their sash and door factory at Oparau, which was imported from England, and has now been placed in position.
We learn that Messrs Nickell landed the mob of sbeep (which were taken off the Torgauten at Kawbia) at Cambridge all right, though the losses on the road were on the heavy side. The following axemen known in this district have nominated for the Te Kiri Chop#Standing, 15 in— W, Tynan 28 secs, G» Tynan 30 secs. Underhand, 16 in—W. Tynan, 28 secs, G. Tynan 80 secs. Persons who require a first-class piano on very easy terms are advised to read the new adverti<«6nioat of tbe London and Berlin Piano Co., on opr back page.* We learn thdi it ie the intention of the various branches of the Farmers’ Union in this district to hold a united picnic at Rakaunui on . March 17th. The idea is to bring all the families of tbe settlers together, and at the same time for the members of the Union to discuss matters of interest to them. Oar correspondent* “Skipper,” who referred in a letter to this paper recently of the waste of room in the ebed by. the presence of ,thp. qpuntep there that was seldom used, will be pleased to learn thai the suggested improvement has been carried oat. It is surprising what a lot of space was taken I up by tbe connier.
The swamp at the back otthe township has never been so dry as it is at present, not a particle of water being visible from some, places surrounding it. We learn that Mr. Davies has definately secured the tease, but there are one or two matters to fix up ere the work of putting in the drains is started. It is almost certain that if an officer of the Health Department oame j here now he would make the owners drain the swamp, as the odour arising from decomposing cat-fish is something dangerous. Many years ago a man -Was named Lickfold was drowned attempting to cross the Puti River, and the remains were interred at tne back of the town on a hill which has since been proclaimed a recreation reserve. A nice piqket fence was placed round the grave, but recently this has been km.eked down by wandering cattle. Wb would like to see some effort made to re-erect the fence, as it is surely a trust on tberresidentfl that the resting place of one whose relatives are not in che district should be kept sacred.

Durjpg the past summer there has been a lot of bathing indulged in locally by members of both sexes, but the pastime has not been carried out under tbe most favourable conditions. The male bathersundress in various offices near the wharf, and.tpke their swim off andaiongaide that B‘r'iCture. The ladies who go fora plunge have to go down tbe beach near the pohutakawa tree-, and are handicapped by there being no placein which they caq disrobe. We would suggest to tbe Town Biard that as bathing and swimming, are indulged in largely Uy tbe residents and visitors that it wuuld be *a good idea if arrangements were made to erect sheds for the use of those desirroos of'§o doing dWMtitdaction is expres-ed at the enormpus rise in tbe valuo of tbe Kawbia Town District put on by Mr Hyde, of the Valuation Department, who paid a visit here acme time ago, and we hear on all eider of objection b?ing lodged—and nn wonder. The case of tbe Settler Office will be suffi cient example. Tbe bleak of “sand” which we lease, was last year assessed at £7, (unimproved value), yet now the same piece of land* (which is under water at. spring tidesj haH been bumped up to £lOO. Why? The valuer is th ■ only person who would have any id*a -f -the reason, and it is safe to ashev”. that his argument would not be too solid. It is rumbuted that nearly evtry objecting, as tho values have all gone up about the same percentage. A RUSH ON IT. -What ?. DERBY tobacco in ■ the new TWO OUNCE TINS. It’s iptendid.

complaints are beard fipm almost every part of • tbe district as to the great scarcity of labour, and it is likely to cause serious loss to settlers. Since the fires the demand has been very keen, and we hear of settlers havJng.tbru) =-r hor jueii..nn sowing, whilst fully 20 are w.wted. The ■ame remark applies to tba Government road works, where 50 men are needed, and also to improvements becarried out by tbe County Council. At.the last meeting of tbe Kawhia Town 8.-ard, tbe clerk* reported tb>t a larger percentage of rates stiill remainad unpaid. It was decided that final no t ices be issued and all defaulters be sued.at next Court for its recovery. It may not be generally known that rates collected, by 81st inst are subject to a subsic ly from Government of 10s in the £. It is easily understood that a local body losing this subsidy through ratepayers indifference is not encouraging to its members. Ratepayers who settle their rates at once will greatly benefit the Town District, and by not doing so they will make themselves liable to a 10 per cent increase on the amount, and probably Court costs, which we trust will not be compelled‘to record.
