THE KAURI RIDING.

(to the editor.) Sib, —Some time ago a petition was numerously signed by settlers in the Kauri Riding asking Mr M‘Cardle, their Council representative to resign, as he has left the district, and is now residing in Wellington. It is not possible for Mr M*Cardle or any other councillor to represent his riding unless he is thoroughly conversant with the people and also the roads, the surroundings, etc. There are miny urgent cases at the present time that need a councillor’s attention, and I think it is the duty of the Kauri Riding to elect a councillor residing there —some one who knows the district and its wants, and with authority to spend a few pounds in urgent cases and clear windfalls, slips, etc., in order to keep the road open for traffic. At the present time the Government do not recognise their liability, so it res*s with the Council to keep the roads open for the settlers. It was rumoured that Mr James Noonan, of the Kauri Valley, would stand for councillor, and I think he would be a very good man, as he is in touch with most of the settiers and knows the wants of the Riding. He is also living in a central position and getatable. In many cises the roads in winter are blocked for weeks through slips aud windfalls, and if the settlers have to wait for Mr M'Cardle to give them authority to get them cleared, well heaven help them. At the present time we are labouring under many disadvantages, but none so great as «he vexed question of roadiug. From what I can see, we ore between the devil and the deep sea. The Government on one side do not recognise their liability in keeping (he reais open. Oa the other, our C-mntv Connc I representative is residing in Wellin’ton. So where do we (the I settler*) com j io ?—Yours e<c., F. A. PEARSON.
