THE AWAROA ROAD.

(to the editor.) Sir, —I notice in a recent issue a letter signed by the settlers of the Awaroa Valley contradicting my statement re trees over the road, etc. I may state that we are all very sorry when one of our fellow men is laid up with sickness and m t able to attend to his business; but if the business of the world bad to stop when one of the Lading men hau tbe misfortune to be laid up, or if tbe road has to be blocked fur months because ouir Council representative has had that misfortune, it is a very sad state of affairs- If a few settlers signing themselves “The Set tiers” are willing to scramble over logs there are many more who live in tbe valley who are not. We are quite aware that the Government has not treated this district fairly as regards reading, but we cannot expect to rush to the help of tbe Government to shift a few loads of earth that may come down in a slip, or to shift a few trees I eat get blown down in a gale, and thus cause considerable inconvenience to the travelling public. We have a County Council, and a representative on that body. Surely bo has power to spend o. few pounds in urgent casts. If not tbe sooner we go back to the good old days of Kawhia the better. Lart week I had the pleasure of seeind one of the Awaroa s dtlers up to his knees in mud clearing the trees off (be road, although “The Settlers” deny they were there. Those most dangerous trees are now cut up and piled on the side t f the road to the satisfaction of nil, who have had to scramble over them for months. I must thank the editor for space in his paper, as I c msider but for him tbe trees would still be across the road.— Yours, etc , OTHERS IN THE AWAROA VALLEY.
