The .House has devoted the whole of this week to the consideration of the schedule of duties in the Tariff Bill, There is every prospect that these will be disposed of to-night and the Premier hopes to get the Bill through all the stages to-morrow. It is then proposed to take the Land and Income Assessments Bills, Land Bill, Endowments Bill and Native Land Bill in this order.

Some important statements were m <de by the Premier last night regarding the flour duty to the effect it was proposed to bring down a Bill empowering the Goveruor-in-Council, when flour reaches an abuorotally high price in Niw_Zealaud (£lO 10a to £ll per ton was mentioned as tbo danger point), the duty be taken off until the price falls to a fair level again. Similarly, if potatoes reach £5 10s per ton the method of an Order-in-Oouncil can apply the brake by letting in p'-tatoes from outside duty free. The figures quoted are only tentative, for Sir Joseph Ward is still securing infoimatiou which will enable him equitably to fix the amounts. On the strength of this announcement the , House refected, by 49 to 18, Mr Hogg’e motion for the abolition of flour-duty.
