Land Hunger.
Judging from the examination o applicants for the Wsimana sections some people have peculiar ideas on tbe object of the Lands for Settlement Act. An example or two will demonstrate.
Applicant (a ; Wanganui man), interrogated, said he had three town sections. What value ? said the Commissioner. Applicant professed not to know, but when given two minutes to put a value on eventually then admitted they might be worth from £5OOO to £6OOO. Asked about his financial position, applicant produced his bank book showing a credit of £2OOO. “Pass him out, Mr Harris," said the Commissioner, “pass him out. A smiling young lady next faced the music, and pathetically said she was devoid of the world’s goods, but her father was next door to a bloated millionairire. Would she reside on the farm ? Oh dear* no ! but her brother was a practical farmer. “Pass her,” said the Commissioner. A young man from Gpotiki candidly admitted that he bad 300 acres of land leased, 70 milk cows, also a great number of fat steers, and a substantial banking account. He was quietly passed out. A Whangarei applicant under examination cheerfully said be held 150 acres of land well stocked aud considerable bard cash. Also passed out. A fine strapping Whakatane boy got rather a shock to bis nervous system. His brother in-law was under examination and was becoming tangled up through want of means, when bis philanthropic relation chinned in volunteering to finance him up to £5OOO ! Passed out quickly. The Commissioner of Crown Lands is a very agreeable mortal, but the individual who thinks to best him at the ball it has to possess more than his fair share of wisdom teeth.—-Gpotiki Herald.
