THE GOVEBNMENT DEFEATED INTERESTING DEVELOPMENTS EXPECTED. (By Tblegraph.) (Special to the S Err lek ) Wellington, Thursday. An awkward situation has arisen over the tariff. When the duty of 5 per cant, on mining engines and machinery was under consideration in ithe House last night, Mr Berries mov-id that -the item be struck out. On the division being taken a number of Government supporters, including Mr Greens!ade, joined with the Opposition in voting against lhe duty, with the result that the amendment was ea _ risd by 82 to 80. Thereupon Sir Joseph Ward declared the action of a suction of bis party to be gros ly unfair a:-.d an affront to the Government, and eaid he was not ftoing to take such a slap in the face from bis own party. He was not sure that in the c’rcumstances be ought to go any further with the tariff. At the Premier's instance progress was reported, which means the suspension for a lime of the discussion of the tariff, and the Government are now considering their position. Instead of g >ing on with the Tariff Bill to-day, as would ordinarily have been done, the House is dealing with the estimates. Further developments may be interesting.
