THE COUNTY’S BY LAWS.
(to the editor). Sir, —Some month or so ago your columns c ntained the by-laws of the Kawbia County Council. They were very interesting reading, but what I would like to know is, Were they com piled for use or ornament ? The rea son I ask this is that I do not think that so far a solitary by law has been enforced. Take, for instance, the width of tires: It is snfe to say that D)t many of the wheels of the few vehicles in the County have been altered. Traction engines and motor Car are out of the question, but the licensing of vehicles, and carrying lights thereon, mU be enforced. No d iubt by tbis time the billiard rooms have {'.id the fees demanded. But what rf the peddler- and hawkers? Since .he publication of the by-laws, I have noticed several people who to my mind come under that beading. A few weeks ago we had a man of some foreign breed travelling around the Maori camp?. I wonder did be pay bis two guineas ? Then we have had itinerant tailor?, grocers and nursery men in galore, all < i whom carried bags, so I presume they come under the category also. I trust that such is the case, as to my mind these peo pie should be taxed. If only the levy was collected from those who s-hould pay, it would go somewhere towards paying the cost of compiling and advertising “The Consolidated By law.”—Yours etc., RATEPAYER.
