Kawhia Harbour Board.

The usual meeting of the above was held on Monday, 291 b, when there were prerent —Messrs W. J. Shaw (chairman), G. G. Jonathan. H. Shaw, H. Armstrong, A. W. Babbage and A. N. Norton. THZ KIA ORA WRECKLetters, acknowledging the Board’s letter of condolence, were received from Mrs Blacklock, Messrs P. and D. Ross. NORTHERN COMPANYH REQUESTS. Mr Langley, local agent, attended, and asked for permission for the company to erect a shed on the foreshore on the south side of the wharf for storing coal in. The structure would be built of iron, but would not be unsightly, and would hold about 10 tons. The company would bep repared to remove the building at short notice if requested to do so, whilst when not lull the Board would be welcome to use it. Another matter was the charges for the berthage of the Waitangi. The Kia Ora’s berthage was fixed at 10s per trip, which was a reasonable amount, but the service to be run by the Waitangi meant four trips to Kawhia a week, and paying at the same rate meant £lOO per ye.ir—a very stiff amount. The manager wanted to provide an efficient service,

which would be of great benefit to the district. He (the speaker) would suggest that after the first two trips a half charge be made. The Chairman : If that is agreed to and we pay for lumping and 4a 6d for lighting we will bo out of pocket. Mr Langley : There would bo no lumping on two of the calls. Cr Jonathan : liuw would it do to agree with Mr Langley’s proposal, and to charge extra for the lights -when Deeded ? Or Armstrong : The cost of lighting the beacons may not be always 4s fid. On the motion of Crs Jonathan and Babbage it was decided : —“ That permission be granted to tho Northern 8.8. Co. to erect a shed, which must be subject to the engineer’s approval, on the purposes:, this permission tn be also subject »o . being rescinded at the pleasure of the Board, on one month’s notice being givdS.” Cr W. Shaw moved and Cr Armstrong seconded —“ That the a.a. Wai tangi pay including lights, for berthage for the first two trips each week, and 5s for each trip after, with cost of lights added when used.”— Carried. THE S.S. ROTHESAY.

Cr Armstrong drew attention to the fact that the Rothesay was always tied up to the wharf, although the vessel was supposed to anchor out. The steamer only paid light wharfage and Was doing great damage to the piles. The Chairman said that the best way to decide the matter was to leave it in the hands of the wharfinger, who could tell the captain to anchor out if be found that damage was being done. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were passed •tor payment:—Wharfinger £5, J. E. Bcott £2, IF. Hoekiag 14s 6d, G. H. Chase 6s 2d, loan poll expenses £5 16s, THE FORESHORE. Cr Armstrong mentioned the fact that Mr A. Wright wanted to lease about an acre and a half on the foreshore near the town for 21 years with the right of renewal and suggested paying rent on a sliding scale. Cr Jonathan : The land would have to be cut up into ordinary sized sections, and put up for public competition. The Chairmem suggested that Mr Wright should make a formal application, , Cr Armstrong : Yet?. He told me the reclamation would cost £5OO. Or Babbage thought that the Board would have to do tbe reclaiming, as there would be no demand for the sections until that work was done. GENERAL. It was decided to take out an insurance policy against accident, to people employed on tbe wharf. Tbe Chairman said that Mr Chase had approached him asking that a man bo put on the day after the steamer arrived to sort out tbe cargo, whioh became mixed owing to the smallness of tbe shed.

It was thought that with the new steam service tho overcrowding would not take place. An accident claim from a lumper was left to the wharfinger to arrange. It was agreed to givo the owner of sunken wood on the beach notice to remove same within 11 days, .end if such was not done to place tbo matter in tbe eolicitpr’s bands.
