SHIPPING MEETING.
(to the editor.) Sir, —I would like to explain why I am stated to have convened the recent meeting re shipping matters. I received letters making certain offers to advance £2OOO «>n certain terms towards establishing a steamer service from either Wellington or Onehuoga to Ka whia, and as you, Mr Editor, also did the same, we j >intly considered that the best way to c nsider such an offer was to lay it before a public meeting. Personally I was not interested, having always received consideration from the Northern B.a. Go., and it was only that I was asked to consult with settlers and business people about this that I took action as a matter of duty. I regret that owing to indisposition I was absent from the meeting.—Yours, etc., T. D’ARCY HAMILTON.
