But such authority shall not relieve the person, driving or taking any traction engine, agricultural or other machine or vehwe over, or upon any bridge or culvert, from liability in re spect of any damage done th such bridge or culvert, by reason of such traction engine, agricultural or other machine or vehicle being driven on or over it, as aforesaid. Notwithstanding anything in Section of this By-law contained the Council may from time to time, by notice affixed to any bridge or culvert, epe-j cify the maximum weight of.V any : vehicle which may be taken bridge or culvert, and no person shall conduct or take any vehicle across ouch bridge or culvert, which itself, or to gether with any thing or things being transported thereon, exceeds the maximum prescribed by such notice. Such notice shall be printed or painted in letters at least one inch long, and be so affixed to the bridge or culvert, as to be readily seen by any person approaching such bridge or culvert.

TRACTION ENGINES. No person shall drive a traction engine, and no owner or person in charge of a traction engine shall permitt he same to’be, upon any road in the County at any time the mefiths of June July, August, September or October in any yc-ar. Provided that Section shall not apply to engine which, with anything JfiSjhmgs being transported thereon, d<Rt not weigh more than one and a halLtbns avoirdupois, for each pair of wheels. < The Council shall issue licenses for traction engines to be driven upon roads under the control of tmrUounciJ, on payment of the following fee, and subject to the following conditions: — (a) The owner of the engine shall apply in writing for a license to the County Clerk. (b) The application shall be signed by the owner of the engine, and shall contain the full name and address of the owner, and the description of the engine, and shall be accompanied by the proper license fee, (o) Each license shall be for one engine only, and shall be signed by the County Clerk, and shall state the came of the owner and the number of the engine, and shall be in force for 12 months from the date thereof. (d) For every license there shall be paid to the Council, before the issue of such license, a fee of ten shillings Every licensed traction engine shall have painted or marked, in some conspicuous place on the offside thereof in letters and figures at least two inches long, the name of the owner and the number of the engine, as shown on the license. No person shall drive any traction engine upon a road, and no owner of a traction engine shall permit such traction engine to be driven or be on a road, unless such traction engine is duly licensed under this By-law, and has painted or marked thereon the name of the owner and the number of the engine as provided in this By-law. in charge of a traction engine upon any rnad shall at ail times have in his possession the license for such traction engine issued by the Council under this By-law, and shall produce such license to the County Clerk, County or Road Engineer, or any person duly authorised by the Council, whenever required so to do.

No person shall drive a traction engine upon a road, unless he is accompanied by another man (hereinafter called “the look-out man”). Such look-out man shall walk or ride not less than one hundred yards ahead of the engine ; and shall carry a red flag between sunrise and sunset, and a red light between midnight and sunrise; and shall warn the riders and drivers of horses, cattle or vehicles, of the proximity of the engine. No person shall drive any traction engine on, along or over any road between sunset and midnight. No person shall drive any traction engine upon any road between midnight and sunrise, unless such traction engine has"a red light showing in front and behind; or unless, where one or more waggons or carriages are attached to such engine, there shall also be a red tail light fixed to the last of such waggons or carriages. The driver of a tractiioa engine, when travailing upon a road, shall so drive and manage bis engine as to cause as little obstruction or annoyance as possible to any person using such road, and shall stop the engine whenever required to do so by any person desiring to ride, drive or lead any horse or other animal past the engine, whether such person shall be meeting or overtaking the engine; audfor the purpose of requiring the driver to stop the engine as aforesaid it shall be sufficient if the person requiring the engine to stop, signify the name to the driver by holding up one hand. No person shall drive a traction engine along any road outside a town district or village at a greater speed than five miles an hour ; or through any town, district, n r village at a greater speed than three miles an hour ; or over any bridge or culvert at a greater speed than one mile an hour No person shall sound the whistle of a traction engine, or cause the same to blow off steam upon any public road. No driver or person in charge of a traction engine, on any road, shall permit the cylinder taps to be opened, or the steam to attain such a pressure as to-oxceed the limit fixed by the safety valve, within sight of any person, riding, driving, or loading any horse or cattle upon a road. No person shall bring any traction engine or any machine, or vehicle attached thereto, on or across any bridge whilst any person is riding, driving or leading a horse or cattle upon, or witbin forty feet of each bridge.
