COUNTY COUNCIL FINANCES.
(to the editor.) Sih, — iam a fairly long goffering citizen and dont wind paying my share of rates, but it goes to my heart to jjnc the way in which the funds of the Kawhia County Council are being ruthlessly wasted. From its initiation the whole thing has been a travesty of local Government. Thesecond motion on their books is, what ? A motion which secured the paymentof the councillors' travelling expenses! and that before they Lad one brass farthing to expend! Is there any honour in belonging to such a body ? 1 trow not. Ido not for a moment blame all the individual members. 1 have lived in several districts where local bodies have been inaugurated, but iueacb one, whether Hoad Board, Town Board or County Council, the members to a man refused travelling expenses to ordinary meetings and only when called out on extra occasions d*d a few take mileage. It is a long time unfortunately till the next Council election, but should I still be farming here it will be my business to canvass and vote for the men who will make it an honour to eit by them and who will refuse to vote themselves money which should go to pay interest on loans. Why, the £7O or £BO a year spent on these members for mileage would pay interest and pinking fund on £l6OO, in fact would enable us to have a decent road from here to Te Awamutn.— Yours, etc, DIOGENES.
