The Farmers’ Union.
Messrs W. J. Shaw, Ross and Haylock have been selected to represent the Kinuhaka braneh at the annual conference to be held in Auckland next week. On the business paper appears .the following proposals of the brhnch : “That thia Branch desiren the Provincial Conference to discuss ways and means of financing small farmers simiiiar to Agricultural Banks established by European nations.” “This Broach expresses the wish that some quicker means be employed to arrive at the aanaal subscription.” “That the Crown tenants have power to elect a member of the Land Board for their District. ” •‘That the Loans to Local Bodies Act be amended so that all unoccupied (Native and Crown) land in any special rating area shall become rateable from the date of occupation.” “That the ProvinciiJ Council Executive strike the subscriptions three months before tbe end of the year, so that the Branches be notified as to amount for the ensuing year,” Tbe Oparau branch will probably be represented by Mr O, Bell. Tbe suggestions forwarded on by that branch are : “That no Notice of Motion for the Provincial Conference, advocating the exec am on of any Public Works be brought forward by any Branch situated in the locality of the works advocated.” “That, in view of some of the proposals in the Land Bill, jiihe Farmers* Union should impress upon the Government the fact that the power of the fanner to rcqoiire the heehold of his land ia absolutely essential 'to the stability of the country.” “That the paramoant importance of roads opening up good land, as the foundation of the prosperity of the Colony, ahooht Be forcibly impressed upon the Government by the Farmers’ Union.”
‘•That the Farmers* Union, should exprora to the Government its appreciation of the action taken in setting up a Commission on the subject of Native lands, apd its hope that this action may be speedily followed by the opening of the Native lands to European settlement.” Tbe suggestion that will probably cause the most discussion is that of the Hamilton branch—- “ That it be a recommendation to ths Colonial Executive that Bule 11, which bars discussion of question* of a party-political nature, be abolished, and that the Provincial Executive be requested tto 00-eperate with a view of getting this reaomiueudation carried out.
