The Land Bill Campaign.
> MEETING AT KAWHIA. I . On Monday nighu Mr Allen Bell and Mr Joseph Flanaghnn addressed a Urge and enthusiastic audience in ScoWs’ hall, Kawhia. The Hon. W. W. M'Oardle, M.L.O , presided and briefly introduced the speakers. Mr Bell, after delivering a forcible address 'on tbe land question, took occasion to refute a statement made by a cit reap mtant in King Country Chronicle, wri-iug .under tbe nom de plume “Beware” This writer gave his readers bo understand that he (the speaker) was being paid to travel round _a»d lecture on the Land Bill. The insiuuatiou was tbatol'a coward, who wished to the unian a slab in tbe back and was not man enough to put his name to bis letter. He could in form them that there were men travelling’ thrbugb'out the colony lecturing on the laud question, mot a single one bf whom was being paid for his time and services.. Tbe writer of the letter waq evidently a man of ihe lowest ideas ancTcouid not understand anyone doing a service to the community without payment. (Applause). Mr Joseph Flanagben then addressed the audience. He confined to ex plaining the method of assessing the unimproved Value and the a fc tude of tbe trades unions towards the land question. He felt sure that if soma of the dweller') in the towns would visit the country and see the conditions under which tbe farmers liveed they would quickly change their opinions. He pointed out that three of the pres ent Ministry were avowed singletaxers, and concluded by urging upon the farmers present tbe necessity of waking up and doing their best to stop the present trend of land legis- ’ laion. (Loud applause.) < The following resolution, proposed 1 by Cr W. J. Bhaw, and seconded by 1 Mr J. E. Scott, was carried unani- 1 mously :—“That this meeting views 1 with great fear and alarm the pro- ! posed Land Bill, as we feel sure that 1 if it becomes law it will very materi- 1 ally retard the prosperity of the whole 1 colony.' 1 The meeting closed with a vote of 1 thanks to the Chairman. I
