THE Kawhia Settler. FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 1907,
The attenaance of householders at the tb ■ mee log for election of a School Committee held this week is on a par with the attendance of school children at tbe school, which latter is described by tbe Inspector as “ the worst ,be knows.” There may be local causes that tend to bring about this sorry state of things, but making every allowance there undoubtedly is but ilttle interest shown by either tbe public, parents or children in matters connected with primary education in this district. It is objected to by some that tbe position of a school committee now is so dborn of usefulness that it is almost farcical to bring a number of ciuzins together to do the work that ordinarily falls to a committee in places such as Kawhia. People are apt to forget however, when matters are running stmotbly, that nccasi h; m iy arise that may make a very urgent call for their services ; a committee is a kcal guard against abuses in a system of which we as colonists am s,irewhat proud. An intelligent r.«_c energetic committee can do much to iaise tha ton of a school, and to got tno children to take an interest in their school and work and to prevent that work from becoming tame and colourless. The teneber sbcu'.d feel that be has toe <«al an Irr ral support of t u co.ni. ui y beh ; : ■ him, and that L * .efforts appr dated, otherwise the teach ng will become perfunctory and without life and vigour.
