Kawhia Town Board.

ORDINARY MEETING. The usual meeting of the above body was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening last, when there Were present—Messrs Jonathan (in the chair), Scott and Turrell. The minutes of tbe last meeting were read and confirmed. The following letter from the Valuation Department, Auckland, was read: —“ I am in receipt cf your letters of the 91b and 15th Mai ch re the valua tion roll for Kawhia T ;wn District. As no application was pnnde for a rod and and no intimation received as to who was the clerk to the Board, I have not bean able to forward tbe valuation roll for the District.. Ft is written up wait iog to be applied for. In reply to your query re a new valuation, I have to s ate that it will be impos.-ihle to make a revaluation fu tho Town Dlstricu for 1907-8 now, but it could ba done far next year if necessary. In th a meantime. therf jre. your Board will have to utik e the roll at present in force for ' rating purposes. Should you coaider thu valuations too low, the necessary revenue could be collected by making tbe rate higher. It does not appear t > me to make any difference to the ratepayer whether he is charged 2d in the £ n £so’or Id in the £on £lOO. As to the probable c >st to your Board of a new valuation, I cannot say positively but I dont think it would exceed £7 10 , pjssibly less, as local bodi s are only charged one third of the coat of making the valuation.—A. J. M'Gowan, Officer in charge.”—lt was decided to apply for the roll.

In connection with opening a banking account, the manager of the National wrote agreeing to an overdraft. —Tbe Chairman thought it would be better to bank at Te Awamutu, and after discussion it was decided that the clerk write to the manager of tbe Bank of New Zealand, Te Awamutn, HBking if he would put the Board on the same footing as the National Bank offered to, supplying him with copy of correspondence with the National, and ask for a prompt reply, and if favourable that a cheque book be forwarded per return mail so that tbe account may be made operative at once ; also, that cheques be signed by any two members and th eclerk.

It was decided to bring tbe following matters under the notice of tbe Hon. R, M’Nub when he visited Kawhia, Messrs Falwasser and Jonathan being appointed a deputation :—Tbe necessity of having the money on the estimates for the Kawhia court house and the Aotca road expended; the protec’ion of the pohutukawa trees ; the advisability of the Government purchasing the native townships and disposing of it as freehold, and also tbe swamp at tbe back of ibe town; the question of taking steps to stop the sand drift. Au account of £1 5s from R. Sircombe, for making a track to Te Pure was held over. A motion was ordered to be sent to tbe Government, asking that the erection of the Kawhia Court House be proceeded with and the improvements to the Kawhia-Aotea road. Mr Jonathan brought up the desirability of <he Government metalling the main conch road, aud moved “ That tbe matter of metalling the main coach road between Kawhia aud Pirongia be urged ou tho Government as a very important national work that should be put in hand at once, and that it bo pointed out (bat tbe road is tho only road from Waikato to Ka whia Harbour and consequently ir, subject to a great volume of traffic; also, that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Kawhia County Council, the Waitomo County Council aud the Te Awamata Town Board asking for their co-operation.’*—Se-conded by Mr Scott and carried.
