Kawhia County Council.

ENGINEER’S REPORT.

At the last meefing of tho Kawbia County Council the engineer (Mr A. Armstrong) presented his first report, which was as follows: •‘I dd not propose at this time to do more than lay befow you an informal 'repbrt, as’ifty acquaintance wibhOounty matters' is as yet limited. 1 accompanied tbe Chairman to Kinohaku and inspected the road improvement in pm. gross there. These consisted of clearing, the usual earthworks, with certain stream diversions necessitated owing to the straightening of the road. All these works I found were being carried out in a satisfactory manner and when finished would fall in line with any future proposal for improvement on this line of road. The men appeared a littje handicapped for jocks to shift the large logs and some wheeling plank 3. The last I took tbe responsibility of ordering and ordered them. These can afterwards be used for reforming culverts. Not being able to get back to Kawhia till the I put in soma lines for the men and proceeded iu Uy off a permanent line of road. I al o iuspecled the road to the boundary at Murokopa. I may say this.is the* worst road I have seen in the County. There are two places wane it is doubtful if much improvement can be made unless at a great outlay. I refer to the double creek and elbow, but until I havs made a, careful inspection I will not refer further to them. Again well dawn on tbo Marokopa side there are one or two heavy rock cuttings. In several places I also noticed that the creek had been included. in tbo road width, contracting it nearly by one half. This will hamper ths widen ing of the road very much in those particular places. With the object cf laying off some work at Councillor Norton’s end of the riling. I went over there on the 4th inst, but found he had to leave on business the day before, and was not expected back till tbe end of the week. Being unccquainted with the district and tbe situation of the work he wanted done, I decided to return to Kawhia, and make fresh arrangements with him at the meeting. I then went on to the Plrongia West road where I laid off 50 chains, the plans for which are all but completed. In connection with the new works to be undertaken, the question as to what width the roads shall be will have -to be decided. Of course, this is a matter of expense, but 1 would not recommend a lees width than 16ft; 18ft would be better if funds would admit it. A 9ft metv.l bed Leaves little margin on each side to the watertable in a 16ft cutting. A decision on this matter by the Council will be necessary. I have to request authority of the Council to get some drawing prper etc.”
