The sepond days sports at Kawhia during the mouth of March (23rd) have been taken over by Taui Wetera, who intends running a programme of athletic events, for (which about £2O w’ll be given in prizes. Details will be advertised later.
That this is a sport loving community is acknowledged, and it is really marvellous bow all the gatherings pay. The month of March appears to be favoured by promoters, as daring that month of this year the following fixtures have been arranged: Races at Kawhia on tbe 22ud, sports at Kawhia 23rd, races at Rskaunni, axemens’ carnivals at Kinohaku and Oparau. Truly a formidable list. Thousands of pounds are yearly saved to the poultry keepers of this Province by the use of Shabland’s Moa Brand Egg Presbrvative. We regret to learn that one of the most respected retideuts of our town has decided to leave Kawhia to reside in Auckland. The person referred to is Mrs Langley, who during her iong residence here has been 8 a ch a usefc] member of the community. Her many friends deplore th? departure, and it it> only to be expected that (bey have decided to tender her a farewell social and also make her a presentation, the date of which has been fixed for Friday, February 22nd.
Persons who require a first-class piano oq very easy terms are advised to read the new advertisement of the London and Berlin Piano Co. on our back page.* For the past couple of seasons tbe output from the Te Rau-a-moa Butter Factory has been carted to Te Awamutu, and from there trained to Auckland. That this was a roundabout way of getting the produce to the grading shed was admitted by the directors, and on one occasion a consignment was sent via Kawhia. That very day, unfortunately, tho steamer was delayed, and in consequence of the fact not being known to the managemecit tha butter had to stay on the local wharf for a couple of days, and naturally deteriorated vary considerably. The opening of a telephone office at Te Rau-a-moa baa made it possible to have the steamers’ movements wired to that place, and the directors have not been slow to avail themselves uf the convenience, and haye wisely commenced sending their output by way of this port. Two lots have now been despatched', arriving at Auckland in tip-top conditipp, and as a result iu future all the bolter is to be shipped from Kajwhia. We welcome this new departure, as it not only means a good saving to the suppliers but also adds to our exports, by which a port is judged. Besides this progressive Te Rau-a-moa intend getting their goods via Kawhia, which is in itself a considerable item. It is stated that if the efforts now being made to -have a bank established eit Kawhia are succcFaful, the whole of the Te Biu-a-moa trade will drift here.
Yoa have soaked your seed in Bhahiand’b Potato Blight .Extbbminatob and your plants are now looking well. Keep them well by spraying with tbe same solution.*
To discontinue advertising,” says John Wanamakor, the millionaire, “ s like taking down your sign. If you want to do business yoa mast let tbe people know it. Standing advertisements, when frequently changed, are better and cheaper than reading notices. They look more substantial and business-like, and inspire confidence. I would as soon think of doing business without a clerk as without advertising.” This is advice which all business men would do well to follow, but it musit be borne n mind that tbe advertising medium must be the best obtainable. We can confidently say that iu consequence of its large circulation, The Kawhia Settler is one of the best papers to advertise in.

Before it was definitely decided to erect a telephone around the Kawbta Harbour the settler® hsd to agitato persistently, and now that tbo *<>« has been completed il appears ** *. **• use will be to a large ex’ent nullified —♦hauka to some busybody at Opa rau. At that place the telephone has been placed in Mr Jonathan a store (wbich was not specially built for a telephone bureau), and because of this fact it has been reported to the Post maHtcr-General that messages cannot bo despatched with secrecy. Tbe result is that neither of the offices at Te Maika or Kinobaka will be opened, excepting soaud proof officc-g are provided, and not at tbe expense of the Ooaernment, but solely of the person who happens to have charge of tbe telephone. The action of the faultfinder was petty and contemptible , (probably the person seldom sends a wire ; but it is some paopte’s nature to be always making trouble), whilst ite effect is wide reaching and will not bo appreciated by settlers generally. The facts of the case ere that the ’phone is in the store at Oparau temporarily only, Mr Jonathan having previously arranged to remove his store and add thereto a telephone office that would be sound proof. At Kinohaku and Te Maika the same will have to be done before the offices can ha opened. SMOKERS. DERBY Tobacco in the new TWO OUNCE TINS is a delightful smoke—is MILD, but does not burn the tongue. Try it.
