THE Kawhia Settler FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1906, Local and General.

The a s. Kia Ora was a couple of hours late in reaching Kawhia from Raglan on Tuesday last. This was occasioned by the steamer towing the scow Whangaroa, laden with timber for Sydney from Messrs Watkins Bros', mill, across the bar. At the Ohaupo cattle sale on Tuesday last prices were well ahead of any for the last year or so. Bright smiles or the faces of toil-worn bush vettiers O 'iiid seen, plainly showing that tb- sale was more than up to the ex* pecutions of the most sanguine.

Thousands of pounds are yearly Bv-d to the poultry keepers of this Pr vine*’ by the use of Shaeland’s Moa Brand Egg Preservative. It makes egbrii g in Is 2d to Is 4d per dozen instead of 6d to Bd. One gallon pre* serves 80 dozen eggs. See that the correct name ia on the label,* The fullowing is a summary of Inspec or Crowe’s latest report of the Kawnia Public School Compulsory Subj'. els: Reading and spelling, very gn id ; cm position, w riling, reci tali' u, drawing, singing, and physical instruction, good; arithmetic, geography, history and moral instruction and beahh, paiisfactory. Additional pni'jcct: : Nature study and elementary icience and needlework, good, fneiiuc ion of class P : Good. Order, discipline and tone of the school: Very good. Efficiency of the school, etc.: Ver/ good.

Don’t forget that good printing can he dour nt the Settler Office. MrD. P. Baird, snrueou dentist, deMWR (o notify ibnt he is leaving K twhia after CbrMmas,*' We are pleased to notice that the □ xi&os weed-? abounding on the roads io the township are being cleared. In this issue Mr Jonathan notifies that ha has appointed Mr E. J. Graham manager of the White Star Sawmill Co. The Kawbm school “ broke up” for tbe Christmas vacation on Thursday. Tbe sch >lara are tu be give i a picnic luring January. Mr Chase h».s purchased Messrs Hinton and Hustler's storekeeping business at Kawhia and branches sur founding the harbour. Persona who require a first-class piano on very easy terms are advised to read the new adrertisonieut of the Loudon and:Berlin Piano Co. on ourback page.* During the coming Christmas holidays a large number of people are ex pccted to visit here, a big party com ing from Auckland, and another from Taranaki. 1

Mr Burd, District Road Engineer, will arrive in Kawhia to-morrow (Saturday) night on his usual round of inspection of works in the vicinity of Kuwbia Harbour.

Miss Godsell, who has for the past two years been a resident of Oparau,, where she was very papular, lefc there to take up her residence in Christchurch on Wednesday last. Remember tbe spores of Potato Blight are carried by the wind from diseased to healthy plants, therefore to keep yonr healthy plants safe spray with Sharland’b Potato Blight Exterminator, which is fatal to blight spores.*

A good quantity of butter is being made just now in this district, the majority of which is being exported to Auckland. Messrs Newton and Armstrong are buying (or a New Plymouth firm, and sent their first consignment away on Tuesday.

Mr M. Forbes has despatched 140 picked heifers from Taranaki to Marokopa, and expects them to reach that place about Sunday. This should be very handy for those who intend going in for dairying in that district during the next year or two. Sevan years experience has proved every claim made for Shareand’s Moa Brand Egg Preservative. In all that time net one egg has been lost when directions have been carried out: it simply cannot fail. One pint bottle preserves seven dozen iaggs. See that the name is on the land.*

In reply to an invitation to visit Ka wbia, Sir Joseph Ward has written to Mr W. W. M'Cardle, chairman of the Kawhia Town Board, thanking that body for their invitation to visit tbe district and that if be could possibly find time before leaving for England it would afford him great pleasure to do so.

Last year’s testimony is being confirmed by this year’s experience, that Saarland's Potato Blight Exterminator is a certain destroyer of blight. Use it to spray your plants, it will destroy any of tie spores that may have been blown from diseased plants on to yoar healthy ones.* The people in the backblocks are becoming sick and tired of baing staved off with promises made to the ear and broken to tbe hope, while they find that those far more populous and concentrated localities are, because of their population and concentration, treated with a liberality that is unjust to tbe more scattered and therefore more necessitous districts.—Hokianga Times.

Messrs E. Pretty and W. Schischka, of Raglan, were passengers by the s.s. Kia Ora for Waitara on Tuesday last en route to Eltham, to compete at the Axemens’ Carnival there on Boxing Day. Both axemen are particularly well and should give a good account of themselves. On the return journey they intend staying here to compete at Marokopa on the Ist and Kawhia on the 4rh. Tbe appearance of these two choppers should be a big attraction at each gathering.

Gazette notices of district interest: —Tbe validation of the error in the polls for the Kawhia County have gazetted, The vesting of the Kawhia Wharf in the County Council is notified, together with a list of regulations, wharfages to be charged, etc. A block of 1209 acres, subdivided into four sections, Awakino North, has been set aside for settlement. The following lands have been permanently reserved: 13 acres 1 rood 24 pesohes, section 5, block 11, Wbareorino 8.D., as a site for a public school; 29 acres 8 roods 80 perches, ’ section 6a, block IV, Orabirj 8 I)., for pqbliQ utility. Tbe local ag*nt of the Northern 8.8. Co. informs us that the tender for tbe Marokopa and the Coast trade is now on way to Kawhia from Tauranga, and weather permitting should arrive here about Christmas time. The s,s. Rothesay is the name of the new boat; she will carry about 20 tons af ordinary cargo, or six to seven tons flax fibre. It has not yet been settled what officer will be put in charge. If the tender should reach here before the New Year, an excursion to Marokopa from Kawhia on tbe Ist would, with weather conditions favourable, mean a (till boat. A number of Kawhiaites would like to visit Marvkopa and see the sports, but the difficulty of getting there overland from the township side will deter miny.

Spray, spray again, and stjU spray your potato plants with Sharland’b Potato Blight Exterminator. It may ba a little trouble, bat it will pay you when you come to (Jig your crops,*

Mr Le Cren, an office of the Labour Department, paid an official visilt to Kawhia during tbe week. A spray in time saves not nine, but many times nine, if it be potato plants you spray, and the solation Bharland’& Potato Blight Exterminator.*

The tender of Mr Walter Morgan has been accepted for conveying the ma>l between Kawhfa and the Oparau Ferry.

This (Friday) afternoon and evening a successful bazaar was held in SoqU’s Hall, in aid of tbe local Congregational Church, a report of w'aic'i will appear next week.

Make sure of gathering year potato crops by spraying the plants with Sharland’s Potato Blight Exterminator. It is the surest safeguard you , can have against blight.* Several residents of this district have decided to go in for bee keeping, a syndicate having been formed to import a number of patent hives. The Government is also to be asked to al - low the apiarist to visit the district, to lecture and instruct.

Oh Wednesday last the books of the Kawhia County Council were audited by Mr Taylor, Government Auditor, who found everything in thorough order. The next day the at the Police Station were gone through, with tbe same satisfactory result. All the gunes for Mrs Newton’s trophy, presented for c imposition between members of the local tennis club, have not yet been completed, but Messrs Baird and La Trobo and Miss Stevens and Mr Jonathan are the only players that have a chance of winning the prize.

It is the intention of the Waitomo County Council to have a conference with the Minister for Public Works at the first opportunity relative to council matters generally, as under present conditions the members find they are powerless to perform the functions of a council. To cur mind the Kawhia Council is in the same position. The telephone office at Oparau was declared open on the llih. We learn that tbe overseei in charge of the work of erecting the line has been instructed to carry it on to Marokopa. If the information is correct (which we hope it is) the line will prove a great boon to the settlers there, more especially so now that vessels call into that port.
