THE Kawhia Settler. Friday, november 16,1986. KAWHIA TOWN DISTRICT.
Ox Monday last the Town District of Kawhia, c inprising the old township of Kawhia and Te Puru and Karewa Na ve Townships, passed from the c nlrol of the Kawhia County Council t-j ihat of the newly elected Town Boirl. Although cp. te * number of re . lent* offered their services to the rat payers and showed a commendable desire to become members of the Bjard, and although most of the ratepayers recorded their votes, it cannot be said that much general interest was taken or auy lively fetfftng or luuthusiaeta exhibited over .the initiation of t iis new order of things. Amongst the ratepayers a are noi inconsiderable few wh i regard with some uneasiness this multiplication of local bodies whilst the community remains so small, and not without reason, for many people who have lived in small townships have not always been happy in thii respect. The zeal for progress among members of local governing bodies often, unfortunately, makes itself severely felt in the rates, while the I enefits arising from the labours of these zealous but i■experienced members is not always in proportion to the money expended. It is also con i d-d that the effect of a local b I > i t divert the j trearo, or as we know P, trickle, of monoy from general GovernnL-nt fluids in other diftc tiom- ho K-iwbia He hour Board and the barbo’ir lights bdlng''’ ir cafe in

The colony may want roads, may want bridges, may want many things it ought to have, but the Christchurch Exhibition must not lack a thumping subsidy out of the proc. .*ds of taxation.—Napier Telegraph. A severe epidemic of irflaenzi hes
lately made its appearance at Harihari. In consequence Messrs Bell Bros, and Ross' flax mill has been closed for a week, do fewer than 10 of the hands being laid up. We hear that there is a move being made by several settlers at Kinoh&ku in the dir ,‘ction of erecting a private telephone line between there and Te Anga, and that there h every prob bility that the proj< ct will be sue ssfally c .tried oat. A sitting ok the Kawhia Court was held on Thursday, when a Maori n> ned Wi ata wr < charged with the theft of an oyetuoac, tin property of Mr G. H. Mackenzie. The case w« . adjourned till to-morrow (Saturday). Me sr.j M'Cardle and Mr son wore the presiding Justices. Some senseless i idividnal wilfully t,et fire to some fern on Mr Mason'srun on Saturday 1: it, the result being that about 100 acres of rough feed v. ah destroyed. The owner has lout the use of a large tract of country, as the charred f -.rn would injure the wool. Mr Mason : i annoyed at the occurrence, and in another column offers a reward for information as to the culprit. The ball, given by the bachelors of the Kawhia district to their friends on Friday night last in Scott’s Hall -was very successful, and all present thoroughly enjoyed themselves. About 35 couples attended, a programme of 24 dances being gone through. The promoters discarded the usual form of decoiutions, in place thereof securing a number of large flags from Auckland. which were tastefully hung, the effect b?iug both noyel and pretty. Toe mosic was, ;<a is ,usual with Kawbia dances, high class, and it is only nccesHary to mention the names of the ladii s aud geat k men who proud I it us a guarantee that such was the case, viz , JMfh Langley, Misscj Stevens, Godseß, Dr Jenkins, Messrs l.c! 1 ! As a result of the recent visit of Inspector Kerr, a contract has been let to Mr R. Sircombo to clear the Government sections in the Kawhia township of noxious weeds; About 25 horsemen attended the horse bunt ou Mr Mason’s run on .Saturday last, and after a very merry gallop a couple of warrigals (Australian for wi ia|h erec) were secured.
Spray, spray again, and still spray your potato plants with Sharland’s Potato Blight Extbbm«nal\>k. It may be a little trouble, bat it will pay you when you come to dig your crops, A Te Kami correspondent writes : —“ It is stated here that our repretative in the Kawhia County Council (Mr M'Cardle) intends resigning. It such is correct Mr J. Noonan is to be asked to fill the vacancy.” Paspalum dilitatum is reeoguised to be a good grass, and in this connection settlers’ attention is directed to Messis Yates and Co.'a end H. D. Bedford’s on our front page. Me srs Newton and Armstrong also notify that they have a small parcel for sale.
The first consignment of wool from this district wra shipped by the Kia Ora on Thaioday when Messrs Mowatt Bres. sent away five bales. It is expected that the amount of wool that will be exported from here this year will be a targe iucrei se ou any previous se< aon.
Seven years experience has proved every claim made for Sharland’s Moa Brand Egg Preservative. In all that time not one egg bag been lost when directions have been carried out. It simply cannot fad. One pint bottle preserves seven dozen eggs. See that the name is on the laoel.*
“ Night and Day,” tho Quarterly M; ;azine of Dr. Barnardo’s Homes, has a crowded issue for September. It gives a fully illustrated report of the annual meeting of the Homes, at which Sir John Gorst, the Bishop of Kensington and Lord Brassey were the principal speakers. A pic tor al supplement is devoted to a striking and indeed unique set of 2412 photographs, showing the fsoe of every boy and girl admitted to the institution in one year. That fact alone speaks eloquently as to the* continued necessity for the benefleient labours of the Homes.
Agitation for the opening of a branch of the National Bank here has been going on for some months past, but so far without result. The manager of the Marokopa Milling Go. (Mr Toomatb) has written to the bank on the matter, suggesting that a fortnightly visit be arranged, and a reply is expected next week. There is a good opening here for a financial institution, and it is difficult to under stand why the opportunity has been neglected so long. The Bank of New Zealand have 'held a section in the main street here for over 28 years, the same haying been purchased by them at a fabulous price. We are pleased to bo able to record the fact that the Northern S.S. Co. has awakened to tho fact that the Marokopa and Aotea trades are worth catering for, an it b nB been decided to havo a louder placed at Kawhia within the next fortnight. Tho craft is to he about 50fr, long with a beam of 15ft., capaMs of carrying from 15 to 20 tone, an i will be drnen by a 25 hp. oil engine. Thia boat h being, put here temporarily, so as to allow tho company an opportunity of toabug the trade before having a boat specially built. Till; being tho case w» trust the settlers will ayail themselves of tho services of the tender, and thus show tho N.S.S. Co. that the agitation was genuine.
