Kawhia Town District.

Increasod interest is being shown in connec'-ion with lha election of repre sentativea to he above body, and on reference to an advertisement column it will be found that there are no les ttjan eleven candidates in the field. It is pleasing to notice this awakening of interest in public affairs, which it is to be hoped is not merely temporary but absolutely permanent. There appears to be a diversity • f opinion as to the voting qualificiti n •, and to settle the question wa cannot d belte’ thio quote the Ac', which reads a-! follows :

“ Every person whose name shall appear on the electoral roll for any riding uf ihoco nty wi'hin vibich the dis rict ii incl ided and who sb-ill own or occupy property situated within the district shall be entitled to vote at the first and any other election of Commissioners prior to any rate being levied under thh Acc and after any rets shall have been levied under this Act the ratepayers of the district and none others shall ba entitled to vote as electors.”

Tbe voting powers are as follows : —Rateable proprety leas than £5O, 1 vote; less khan £lOO, 2 votes; less than £l5O, 3 vote? ; less than £350, 4 votes; over £350; 5 v:>tes. (to the editor.) Sir, —I notice by your paper that there are q <ite & number of candidates for tbe five s*-a?s on the Town B ;ard. and personally 1 am very pleased to see it. There are a lot of questions to be carefully thought cut, and the elec tors should be c iroful to elect tbe best men. Being practically a new matter, and as s nna >f the aspirants are untried as far as public life is concerned, I would suggest that tbe hall be hired and each man place hia views before tbe electors. Of course a time limit would have to be imposed.—Yours, etc., ELECTOR.
