THE Kawhia Settler FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 1906, Local and General.
The Kawhia 8. M. Court will sit on Wednesday, 29th inst., at 9 a.m., when a good number of eases are set down for bearing. Mr Jordan has been appointed Grawn Lands Ranger for this district (vice Mr Thornton) and will visit Ka wbia in about three months’ time. By advertisement in this issue Mr Wong Lem (who has leased Mr Falwasser’s shop on the beach) announces that be is starting business as a general storekeeper. The Northern S.S, Co. are getting another new boat out, and we beard it rumoured in Auckland that it is probablu the steamer will be put on the run now done by the Kia Ora. Are you growing potatoes ? If so, make sure by using Shakland’s Potato Blight Exterminator that your seed and your labour are not thrown away. The use of this’specific will give you surprising result*. Your grocer can tell you all about it and supply you with it.* After giving Riglan a fair trial, Mr George Wright has decided to return to Kawhia and will re-commence business as saddler next week. We extend a hearty welcome to Mr Wright. By the s.s. Kia Ora Ibis (Friday) morning Mr Forbes brougkt 98 bead of cattle from Waitara. The stock were landed at Lemon Point and were then started for Mr Forbes' section on the Marakopa River. Thousands of pounds are yearly BBVed to the poultry keepers of this Province by the use of Sharland's Moa Brand Egg Preservative. It makes eggs bring in Iw 23 to la 43 per dozen instead of Gd to Bd. One gallon preserves 80 d'.zon eggs. See that the correct name is ou the label** For Bronchial Coughs an l CoiiL, Wood® Great Popper mint Cur®. Is ®d nJ ?e fid per bottle.
Mr E. J. Graham, of Waitetuna, bad the misfortune to have the valuable Clydesdale entire, “ Beu Lc» mond,” which was intended for this district, killed. The loss is a heavy one. The bachelors of Te Riu-a moa held a ball in the school house on the 10« h in®t. The attendance was not a® largo as it might have been owing to the wet weather, but still au enjoj* able time was spent. We learn that road work is being pushed forward in the locality of Te Rau-a-mna. Randall’s road is now nearly completed, and two other roads leading from the main ro id to settlers’ homes are to be started immediately.
The Kawhia Cemetery Tru Les intend holding a meeting to-m trow (Saturday) night, to discuss various matters. The rules as framed by the members are advertised in this issue. We learn that it is intended to at once call tenders for fencing the area.
Large and small potato growers will find it to their advantage to treat their seed with Bharland's Potato Blight Exterminator. It effectually prevents blight and improves the crop. Growers have already proved its value. Get partioulrrs from your storekeeper. He stocks it.* The anual meeting of the Teßau-a--mos Butteir Factory has been fixed for Saturday, September 15th. The directors have appointed Mr Allcock manager for the ensuing season. An offer of lOfd per lb. has been received for the season’s butter, but r>he offer ha? go far not bean accepted.
Mr T. D. Hamilton, formerly a Kawbia resident, has purchased a share in a manufacturing and indent bu?i ness in Auckland. Mr Hill is tho other partner. The premises are situated in Lome street, where Mr Hamilton will be pleased to meet any of his many friends in this district.
We ham that one of Mr Williamson’s boats will make the first trip to the Marokopa Biver on Monday. It is intended to run a regular service between Waitara and Marakopa, the business people of the first named place being confident of opening up a substantial traue. Look out Kawhia.
The s.s. Kia Ora did a smart trip between New Plymouth and Onehunga last week, the time occupied being 22 hours. Ae the ports of Kawbia and Raglan had to be worke’d the performance was particularly good. Since her last appearance here a commodious cabin has been erected near the bridge for the use of the captain, the improvement being very necessary. ’Seven years experience has proved every claim made for Sharland’s Moa Brand Egg Preservative. In all that time not one egg has been lost when directions have been carried out. It eimply cannot fail. One pint bottle preserves seven dozen eggs. See that the name is on the label.*
The Mercantile Gazette, an Australian publication, recently printed a paragraph that “ a new port on the West Coast of New Zealand, named Raglan, has just been opened, a boat having been chartered to load a cargo of timber for Sydney.” The soow Whangaroa in at present leading a cargo of 180,000 ft. of kahikatea for Sydney and expects to leave for that port on Saturday. The demand, for land in this district is increasing, and it is predicted by persons who should be qualified to judge that shortly it will be far greater. During the past few weeks tho following sales have been effected : —Mrs’ Yells’ farm at Oparau to Mr M'lntosb, of Mangamaboe; Mr E. D. Hamilton’s section at Kiritehere to Mr Jones, of Mokau ; Mr Dickson’s section at Oparau to Mr Troughton, of Thames, During the past four years Mr T. Rothwell, of Te Kowbai, has been ex peri men ting with the object of developing a new aud improved variety of potato, and be has now succeeded in producing a potato which is blight resisting, and the tubers of which arc of good size, shape and quality, and have the appearance of being a gcod kind for table use. Mr Rothwell has not sprayed this potato and the blight has had no effect upon it. We hope that future experience will confirm this result, a? a thorough blight-resisting potato will not only prove a gold mine to its introducer, but also a great boon to mankind.
Mr W. T. Jennings, M.H.R. for Egmont, speaking ,in Auckland at a social given in bls honour, urged the necessity of the dwellers in the cities sympathising with the back blocks, and appealed for the citizen’s interest to better the condition of the pioneers of settlement. He had seen their hardships and was qualified by his intimate acquaintance with the out-back districts ts speak with some authority. He gave instances of incidents that came under big observation. Ono was tho carrying of the dead body of a child on horseback by a settler for over 70 miles for the necessary declaration to be made before a Justice ef the Peace before the child oould be interred. Several further instances were given of the sufferings of men injured In bush falling and co-operative works, and the illness of women and children. The remedy for these matters was the establishment of cottage ' hospitals at suitable places. In eeason and out of season he would regard himself as the advocate of the back block? settler, and be thought that, admirable as was the present Cabinet, some better provision should have been made for tbo representation of the farming community by such a member as Mr Hogg or Mr Symes. He considered that a million of money should be raised for providing roads, bridges and telephones for the backblookn, thus minim Ling the hardships and brightening the lot of the hardy settlers.
Messrs Yates B>nd Co. have a new advertisement on our front page.
