I’. reone who gave evidence before the Laud Commission when it sat in this district will no doubt remember Air M'Lonnan, and will regret to hear of his demi-e, which occurred recently in tbe South Island. Those in search of good specs, are advised to note tha list of properties advertised in this issue by Blr E., C« and Messrs Nekton and Armstrong. The s.s. Ora is .lying al New Plymouth awaiting the tides to make before working Waitara. The steamer is expected to returns to Kawhia tomorrow (Saturday). It is pleasing to note that Mr J. E. Scott has commenced the improvements to the wharf (which includes the erection of a derrick) and hopes to have the work completed in about three week’s time.
Tfec following sectionsin this district have reverted to the Corwn -Section 7, block 1., Kawhia South, formerly h“'-1 iiv G. D McConrick ; section 8, bl ck VIII., Wharoorino, formerly hdd.by G G. D. Lawrie. Mr Williams, of Dannevirke, who has a section on the main coach road, arrived here last we- k, and has since let a contract for falling 200 acres. Mr Turrell, who has the adjoining section, ie also having 50 acres felled. Insure your potato crops against the blight by using Sharland’s Potato Blight Exterminator. The cost is very light emd the return certain. Obtainable from all grocers in bottles making five gallons of mixture, and in tins making 24 and 120 gallons.*
The recent rise in the price of dressed flax has caused keen competition for that growing on the estuaries of the Kawhia Harbour. Buyers are at work for both Mr Williams and Mr N. King, whilst Mr Walter Morgan is also purchasing green flax which will be shipped to Messrs Wallis Bros.’ mill at Raglan. The public of Kawhia kave raason to be thankful to Mr Hans Boesen for the perseverance be' has displayed in running the coach between the Oparau Ferry and Pirongia all through the winter. The magnitude of the undertaking can only be guaged by those who have travelled the road, and Mr Boesen is to be congratulated on his energy.
It is surely time that the Government conceived and executed some definite scibems for roading the backblocks. . . .Selling or leasing Grown lands on tbe faith of roads which merely represent the clearing ! and scratching of the surface is a false pretence iu which an honourable community should be ashamed to indulge. —Wellington Post. Twenty-four hours treatment with the mixture made from Sharland’s Potato Blight Exterminator and once or twice spraying with the same fluid later, will ensure your potato crops against faillure from blight. It is obtainable from all stores, making five gallons, and tins making 24 to 120 gallons/ Some months ago Messrs Bell Bros, and Ross, of Harihari, decided to pack their flax to Te Maisa, so as to make ante of regular shipments. With this object in view 19 horses were purchased, acid now oply two are left out of that number that are fit for work, five being killed outright and the remaining dozen maimed ! The reason of this state uf affairs is the frightful state of the road (?) (or, to be more Correct- tbe absence of a road). This lij hearnd fi<*m have been compelled » ’■pvert ■ • the old style of surfing the fibre t» be «,8. Kia Ora when the weather suits.
Mr A E. Langley has disposed of his flax mill and plant at Aotea to Mr Charles Vifilliams, late of Whakatane. Mr Williams, who is well and favourably knov/n as a flaxmiller at the last named place, is making extensive improvements in the mill, and intends to run a etripper day and night. He had ■quite a busy day with the Kawhia natives on Thursday, purchasing from them large quantities of fl xx here. It is his intention to erect a mill in Kawbia if he can secure sufficient flax to warrant such an undertaking, if not the flax will be carted to the Aotea mill. Mr Williams is showing oom mendable vigour and enterprise, and his large expenditure must benefit the district, We wish him every success. Since the notice first appeared in our columns about the s.s. Corinna calling into this port, many people (-oiYiG of whom ought to have better son-e) have been persistent in their asßorsion:; that that steamer would never do so. Personally we had every confidence in the word of the company’s New Plymouth agent and felt certain that the Union 8.8. Company would not mislead the public by inserting an incorrect advertisement in the Settler. On Wednesday we wired Mr Morgan,\tbe New Plymouth agent, an follows : “ Wire when to expect Corinna here. Many enquiries.” The reply was: “ Question waiting General Manager’s return from Aus tralia. Corinna ig docking Dunedin and will not return New Plymouth till tenth September. Will wire when settled ” Sharland’s Potato Blight Extkr minator is ’obtainable in bottles suitable for those who are growing potatoes only in quantities for household use. One bottle makes fivo gallons of tbe necessary mixture, and is amply sufficient for small quantities of seed. Obtainable at all stores/’
After a forced holiday of three weeks owing to an injured eye, Mr Pettit, of this paper, has again returned to business. We learn that large quantities of wire have been recently carted to Te Ran a-moa for the purpose of subdivid ing the sections to more effectually cope with the ragwort pest. Potato-growers will find a specific, for the dreaded blight in Sharland’s Potato Blight Exterminator. It kills it and rft the same time improves the size and quality of the tuber. Ask your grocer for particulars.* Mr A. R. Langley, <<f Raglan, has decided to hold an auction nale here at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September Ist. when a new racing yacht and a quantity of sundries will be off*-red. Further entries are solicited, which can be left at tbe Set'ler Office. The work of erecting the tele hone line around the Kawhia Harb cur is being unnecessarily delay:d. It is some weeks now since the poles were landed here and it behoves the Go vernment to have the work commenced (and completed) immediately. Seven years experience has proved every claim made for Sha.rl\nd’s Moa Brand Egg Preservative. In.all that time not one egg has been lost when directions have been carried out. It simply cannot fail. One pint b >ttle preserves seven dozen eggs. See that the name is on the label.*
