In tho Marakopa Kawhia match two accidents happened which were not chronicled inasmuch as they were thought to be dnly trivial, but at the time of going to press both Mr W. Edwards, who strained bis knee, and Mr H. H. Pettit, our editor and pre prietor, who met with a black eye, in ju :, *t tho surface of the eyeball, arc inca, picitated from working. Mr Edwarde is, we are happy to say, im ' proving, but our local medico has stopped the editor from working for ; a month, so 1 that the office' is now under the management of Mr Curry, of New Plymouth.
That one of our energetic settlers, Mr Yells, should hivve passed away so -uddenly is sad in the extreme. He was one of tho first to take up.a sec 'tion at Oparau, 'and by indeuomatable energy and expenditure of a considerable sum he has put bis section into good order. Being a native of England, be first settled in Routh Australia, where he was mareied and still has relatives. Ha kayos a widow, two sons and four daughters to mourn their loss. The (uneral took place at Kawhia on Tuesday, when a large concourse of people followed the oertega, the service aS the grave being conducted by tbo Rev. R. Mitchell. The cause of death was peritonitis.
The Raglan. Chronicle says ;—" A successful potato grower states that he has used the following specific, and says that during the past five years he has not bad his potato crop affected with blight;—The seed are soaked in the following mixture: Gibs sulphate ammonia and Gibs nitrate of potash dissolved in 25 gallons of water (or 4oz of each per gallon of water) for 24 hours, and then allowed to dry for 24 hours before planting, thereby preventing mildew. Some of our local potato growers might try a small quantity, treated as described here, and we shall be glad to learn the reaulUi.”
At various times wo receive some nicely-worded communications from people on the look out tor cheap advertisements, and always have to be on the qui vive to avoid being taken down. The latsst, which is one of the “ coolest ” requests we have received, is from the ed'tor of a Melbourne periodical. He has a pet scheme whereby newspapers giva him a free paragraph in order to announce an important (?) event in connection with bis pe.'odical. We notice several newspapers have fallen in for this bit of cheap advertising, and though we are willing to give assistance to any deserving cause, we are “not taking any ” this time.
