APPLICATION FOR £2500 LOAN AND £ FOR £ SUBSIDY. REPLY FROM HON. HALL JONES Mr H. J. Greenslade, M.H.R , recently received a petition from Mr J. K. Newton, Clerk of the Kawhia County Council, signed by the settlers interested requesting him to forward it to the Miniate? for Public Works, with a view to securing for the AwaroaMahoe road a loan of £2500 under the Local Bodies Act,” and also if possible a £ for £ subsidy thereon. Our member at once f orwarded tbe petition to the Hon. Hall-Jones, who has now replied to Mr Greenslade as follows, under date of the 16th inst l4 l have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 7th, covering a petition addressed io me by the settlers interested in the construction and metalling of the Awaroa-Mahoe road. In regard thereto I have to state that the Government is unable to take any action in cenneetion with tbe matter of the proposed loan referred to in the petition until the necessary and requisite proceedings for the sanctioning of the raising of the loan have been taken in accordance with [the requirements of tbe law. In this connection I am enclosing herewith for your information copies of the “ Local Bodies Loans Act, 1901-02-08.” The method of proceedure required to be followed, so far as the preliminary steps to the raising of the loan are .concerned, are set forth in sections 7 to 13 inclusive of the Act of 1901. I have, therefore, to suggest that the necessary ’proceedings be taken as early as possible, and that immediately afterwards application be made to the Hon, the Colonial Treasurer for a grant in respect of whatever amount may be sanctioned. It is very desirable that proceedings in this respect be taken at the earliest possible mcment, in order that the matter of the application for a subsidy from the Public Works JFund for the purpose of assisting in the carrying out of the work may be considered when the Estimates for the current year are being compiled.”
