Fatal Accident at Kawhia.

CHILD KILLED BY A FALLING PLANK. One of the saddest accidents that it has ever been our painful duty to report occurred on Wednesday last, the result being tbe almost instantantaneous death <»f Myrtle, daughter pf Mr and Mrs J M‘Burney, agad about 5 years. The child was staying with her grand parents (Mr and Mrs Berg) and olong with seme other children was playibg on the pontoon which is biing repaired on tbe baacb. Myrtle h id evidently seen danger and attemp ted to gat away, but tripped over a piece of timber and fell, the plank flying round and falling on the little girl’s bead. When picked up by Mr Healy, blood was rushing from the lose, mouth and ears, and death took place a minute or two later. Such was tbe evidence given at tbe enquiry b «fore Mr M'Oardle J.P., on Thursday, when the jury (Messrs Pettit foreman, E. Falwasser, A. Ward, F. Hosking, J. Prentice and A. Jourdain) returned a verdict of accidental d atb, no blame being attachable to any person. Tue interment took plac? on Thursday afternoon, the service a! the graveside bsing c inducted by tbe Rjv. R. Mitchell. Wide and genuine sympathy has been expressed to tbe bereaved relatives in fiuoh a sad and sudden bereavement. The father and mother left Kawhia for Oparau only last Bat urday, when tbe child was in the best of health, and the news of the fatality was a severe blow to both of them. The deceased was a bright little £irl with a sunny disposition, and her loss has caused sadness to many hearts.
