OCEAN BEACH HOT SPRINGS.
(to the editor.) Sib,—I am informed that during a late gale a large quantity of sand has been washed up, which has almost entirely blocked up the springs, rendering bathing impossible. I have had an idea for some lime, and trust that it might be possible to turn this spring to better account. Of course the success or otherwise of the plan I am about to propose depends upon whether the water would rise in the pipe—artisian fashion—or not, and as this is only experimental, whether the sum necessary to make the trial could be collected. I propose that say 100 ft. of Ssin. or Bin. galvanised pipe should be got, the lower length to be properly shod with a sufficient number of gin. holes drilled in it for about Bft. above the bottom. The hottest part of the spring should be found, probably indicating its head, the pipe to be driven into the ground at this place ; to do this tbe time of the lowest tides on a fine day would have to be chosen. A light pile driver would be needed, with a heavy wooden ram to drive the pipe, but this could be constructed without much expense. This machine could be erected on a pent and towed out to tbe site and the pipes driven from tbe punt. If it was found that the hot water rose in the pipe, even to high water mark, the ■tend pipe—that is tbe pipe driven into the beach—could be connected to a pipe leading to the shore, where it could be delivered into a proper bath. Tbe pipe proposed is small indeed, but quite large enough to keep a batb going, whilst it would offer but little resistance to the force of the waves, besides it could be stayed in a sufficient manner. Tbe cost of this experiment would not be more than £25 or £3O at the outside, if the driving was at all easy. I need not take up more of your space, but will be glad to help further in the matter if the idea is thought anything of.—Yours, etc., ALEX. ARMSTRONG, G.E. Oparau, August 29, 1905.
