COUNTY COUNCIL MATTERS.
(to the editor.) Sir, —Kindly allow me space to make a few remarks relative to the schedule of urgent works which the County Council deputation is to bring before the authorities in Wellington. It seems to me that the member for Te Kauri Riding (Cr M* Cardie) takes very little interest in the making of roads in the riding he represents, but perhaps this riding does not concern him very much. Why has the Awaroa Mahoe road been put amongst the main roads, and the Kibi road mentioned as a by-road, when it is a direct road for stock going out to the Wai kato markets from all round the southern part of the harbour ? Occasioned mobs of cattle pass through the bush track going to and from Kawhia South even now, although it is in a very bad state. I have no doubt that Cr M'Cardle could make five miles of road through bush country with £4OO, but there has now been over £lOOO spent on this road and there is not nearly five miles formed yet. The Kaimangu road has not been mentioned at all, but perhaps a road is not needed there. Nothing was said about metal ling our main coach road, which should have been the first road on the list, but I dare say £2500 will do nicely for the Awaroa-Mahoe road.— Yours, etc., C. A. MOWAT.
(to the editor.) Sir, —It is with very great reluct ance that we proceed to beg for a few crumbs and at the same time criticise our members’ inaction. But he having risen from that obscure cozy corner called private life, bravely gives up to his friends the privilege of criticising to be criticised. We base our remarks upon the report in your last issue of the second County Council meeting, and we ask how it is that the Te Maika road was not included in the list of urgent public works for which grants were to be applied and urged by the council’s deputation now proceeding to Wellington. Comparing the amount for the different ridings, Taharoa is sadly neglected—miles of road is all that is asked for. There is £650 of loaded money for this road : deduct this amount and we have left £250 asked for as a grant for the practically roadless riding of Tabaroa. This Wbakapirau road is, we grant, a most worthy work, and upon it we congratulate Cr H. Shaw. But why is it that other members are able to carry their recommendations for thousands of pounds for widening toads they already have when we have not a road to widen. We think our member is too modest. The Taharoa Riding has no more important main road than the Te Maika, and we ratepayers, receiving no consideration, deeply deplore that so good an opportunity has been lost of using the influence that was available at the last county meeting. The fact of this main road never having been mentioned does our cause barm, fiks it veils its importance in the eyes of the Government and gives grounds for delaying a most important work.—Yours, etc., BELL BROS. AND ROSS.
