Kiritehere.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Road work is in full swing at the present time in this district. The District Road Engineer (Mr Barron) and Road Overseer (Mr Keviile) arrived here about three weeks ago, and since then have let three co-operative contracts on the Kiritehere Valley Road, No 1 contract to Mr Wouldas, No. 2 to a party ‘of Maoris, Na. 8 to Mr F. Templeman, whilst a gang ot three wages men is also employed. There are close on three miles of road under construction, upon which about a dozen men are employed now, and the number will be increased io 16 in a few weeks. We have had three weeks of beautiful spring-like weather, and potato planting is in full swing, The natives are planting fairly large patches, and some ot Ibe settlers are determined to do away with packing potatoes next year. The settlers and people trave.-.ug to and from the Marokopa to Te Maika, complain that tbe workmen employed on the Potaka deviation have placed an obstable to prevent them using the road, thus causing them to go over a high hill. It is hoped tbit the Engineer will see that the public has the full benefit of worU done, while tM rjad is in its winter state. [We have enquired into this complaint, and fi il that a barrier was placed acrore the road to keep traffic off until it had eat. —Ed. S.j
