Kawhia County Ball.

‘THE SUCCESS OF SUCCESSES.’

The above event, held on Monday eight last, was not only a brilliant function, carried out in every detail in t ! p top style, but it wai antly ter red by everyone wb > had tbe good fortune 11 b? present a< “ he success of -licenses,” as far as sicial events held in Kawhi i are c ncorned. The ide> he promoters to hold such a gather - ti commemorate the inauguration >f he C mnty was indeed a happy one, tnd if che succ ss of the County—and the energy ti be displayed in tbe carrying oat of the duties in c mnaction herewith—is tu b? on a scxle similac to tbe ball, re i!e its of thi district c in look into tbe future with pleasant i iticipation. Tbe weather was paricularly bright d iring the day, cons; q lently settlers from all pirte o<4he (strict attended in full force, the number present b ing estimated at 175, whilst about 60 couples participate'! in tbe dancing. The hall wei beautifully dec iratod for the occtsion, and was a credit to the taste of those responsible for the work. A large number of flags and Chinese lanterns were bung above masses of evergreen?, chiefly nikau palms, whilst tbe walls were almost hidden by ferns, etc. —altogether the appearance of the hall being particularly gay. Tbe balcony was utilised as dressing rooms, thus leaving a much larger space available for dancing. At all times the floor ot the Kawhia Hall is above the average, but on this occasion special attenhad been paid to this important item, and the labour necessitated proved successful, in fact the floor was too well prepared for some of those in attendance. Miss Stevens (piano) and Mr Jonathan (piccflo) provided tbe music, which was played in the beat style of these musician?, who have been such a help to all social events held in Kawhia daring tbe past season. Mr H. Armstrong assisted on the cornet. whilst extras were played by Miss Yells, Mr Moulton, Mr Gosling, Dr C. Campbell Jenkins ’(piano), and Mr We Davis (flute). Mr A. L. Turrell had the management of tbe sapper, and the edibles supplied by him were both varied and excellent. At about 8 30 p.m. the ball was opened by the Chairman (Cr W. W. M‘Cardie) welcoming all to the dance, and expressing the hope that an enj )yable time would be spent. Tbe grand march was then proceeded with, the members of the Council leading, after which dancing was proceeded with merrily. We had intended publishing a list of the ladies’ dresses, but found the task and the responsibility attached thereto too great, so our readers must be satisfied wbec U is stated that the costumes were both beautiful and costly Messrs Gosling, E. Faiwasser and Pearson ably carried out the duties of M's.C. Dinning continued till about 8 a.m. A word ot commendation is required for the energetic manner in which the secretaries—Messrs Jonathan aud H. Armstrong—worked, (particularly Um former), and the completeness at details conclusively proved that much time and labour had beau expanded in carrying out the arrangements necessary to bring tbe ball to such a successful issue.
