The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the U.S.

The Equitable Life Assurance Society haveTbrwarded a rather unique booklet, which at the present stage in the scheme for mutualisation of the Society will prove interesting to policy holders and intending insurers. It contains the Society’s report and bal-ance-sheet for the year 1904, and also a detailed statement of each security in which the funds of the Equitable are invested. In cases where stocks and bonds form the investment the rate of interest, book, par and market values are shown separately. The listr b'f mortgages gives the town and street in which the mortgaged property is located, the amount lent and valuation of each. Upwards of 1500 separate securities are thus described. The publication of this statement is a reply to the recent criticism concerning the investment of the funds. The Spectator (New York) of May 4tb publishes a statement by Mr H. 0. Frick, chair* man of the committee formed for the purpose of investigating the investments of the Society, in which it is stated that “ the interest of every policy holder is absolutely safe,” M the assets of the Society are all in its possession,” “ they are "absolutely sound, and the integrity of every one of the Society’s contracts is unimpared.” Assurances in force at the end of December. 1904. over £300,000,000; assets in force same date, over £85,000,000 ; surplus, over £16,500000 ; increase in assets for year, over £6,500,000 ; increase in surplus, over £1,500,000.
