A COMPLAINT RE BETTING.
(to the editor.) Sib, —Although all the arrangements were ably and wall canducted by those in charge as officials of tbe Kawhia Hack Racing Olcb, during the roots held c,n Saturday, March 25th, I regretfully have a complaint •**' to make, regarding the looseness of some of the penciliers (sometimes called bookmakers), in being allowed to construct their own modes of betting —which at the best of times at small outside meetings are far from honourable of purpose—without being called to book by those in authority, thusly : monies were taken in Kawhia to any amount the 1 ‘ victim ” (afterwards proved) was prepared to lay, and when a double was backed successfully the holder of the ticket was informed with very little politeness, indeed, that be could have his original amount of investment returned, as all doubles had been cried off. So far so good, but, Sir, perhaps some of your readers familiar with turf lore can give vent to this /rrievauoe to decide why tbe officials allowed such malepractices without interference ?—Youra, etc., ICONOCLAST.
