Don’t forget chopping carnival and races to be held at Kawhia on March 24th and 2Stb. Aotea residents are again moving in the direction of having the rooks in the Pakoka river removed. On Friday last the steam launch Hau turn, took away the boring plant for the Awaroa Coal Mine to the acene of operations. The work of erecting the plant is now being proceeded with. As a result of the visit of a Roman Catholic missiouery a week or two ago, an Anti Shouting League has been formed in Waimate. Members will neither “shout” nor be “ shouted ” for. A large quantity of grass seed has been sown in thia district lately, and the recent showers will be very bene* ficiol. Per the s.s. Kia Ore on her last two trips from Pnehnnga, about 200 bags have been landed at Kawhia. The oil launch-Queen of Beauty left for Waitara early on Sunday morning. During her stay in the port, a good number of fish were caught, which were taken to Waitara. In all pro* babilify the boat will make these trips periodically. At the Auckland Crown Land Board last week the application of a settler who surrendered his lease of L.1.P., taction 5, block xvi, Kawhia North, for the remission of part of the current half-year’s rent, amounting to £8 Ils was declined A Te Ran-s-moft correspondent writes:— ** I undf i itrnd that Mr H. J. Greenalade, who has promised, at the request of many of our settlers, to to visit Te Rau-a*moa in conneotion with the ragwort trouble, has deferred doing so for a few days, pending a reply from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, whom he has requested to ao* company him on the visit. It is to be hoped that Mr Mackenzie will see bis way clear to accede to the request, as, like Mr Gr&enslade, he has the reputation of being a true friend of settlers, and 'especially pioneers of the back-blocks.”

The powers that be have no better piece of uatoral beauty in the North Island, yet, for the sake of a few pounds, they are content to lose it. A couple of residents offered to lease this section off the owners, but the natives would not come to terms alfhodgh, p high price was promised. Mr E. J. Stanley, of “ Waimaki,” Kinobaku, entertained several friends at his section on Sunday last. The party partook of a sumptuous lunch, which was set out in a specially constructed marquee composed of nikau palms, toil to reeds, etc., the edibles being of a high quality. The afternoon win devoted to inspecting Mr section, and the various improvements were the subject of much favourable comment, especially the splendid sole of rye grass on bis last year’i clearing, and the prime condition in wlbich his Lincoln sheep appeared. An excellent tea was provided, after which the parly had a pleasant ride to their various homes, after having spent a really enjable day.
