Kiritehere.
IMPORTANT MEETING OF BETTLEBB. (Sfkuu. Rxroxi.) On Wednesday, tile Ist inst., a meeting of settlers on the Lower Marokopa end Kiritehere block was held at Mr Waatau’s residence, Puketoe, Marakopa Heads, when every settler in the block was present. Mr Rose was voted to the chair, and also to act as secretary. It was unanimously decided to form an association to be known as “ The Kiritehere and Marokopa Settlers' Association." The preliminaries having been arranged, the first business introduced was the necessity of improvement in the mail service. It was decided' to ask ths Chief Postmaster to inaugurate a bi-weekly service between To Malka and Kawbia, in place of a weekly one as at present, the existing arrangement being very cumbersome, as a letter posted at Te Maika on Sunday (the usual day on which the settlers left their sections) it would not leave until the following Saturday and was then delayed in Kawhia until the following Tuesday ; also, to have a mail carrier appointed to run the mail weekly from Te Maika to Kiritehere, leaving letters, etc., at Harihari, Tahaton and Marokopa Heads en route. After a very lengthy discussion, Mi' Wouldes proposed and Mr Klein seconded, that the secretary write to the Minister in charge of the Beads end Bridges Department, urging that the sum of £lOO which had been placed en the Estimates for improving the Kawhia-Awakino coast road, be spent immediately, in re opening and forming the old deviation on the Potaka, between To Maika and Taharoa, and if there be any balance it be spent in fascining and clearing other portions of the same track ; also, that the vote of £2OO for the Kairimu road be expended, as a present settlers on the Kairimu and Mangakokopa saddle had absolutely no access at all. It was decided that the 11 thirds ” that had already accrued on the Kiritehere sections be utilised in re-bridging the creeks, clearing and lascining the old survey track up the Kiritehere stream, from the sea beach to the junction of the Bararhnu Creek, pending the construction of the road.
A long discussion took place on the subject of grants for roads, and it was resolved that the Minister of Public Works be asked for grants during the coming session of Parliament for the following roads:—That the Marokopa Valley road be extended from when it ends at present to the Kairimu junction; that the main coast road from the Bararimu junction tp the Marokopa Heads bridge site be formed; that the Whakahau road be formed from the Kiritehere io Nukuhakari; that the main coast road from 'Te Maika to the Marokopa Heads bridge site be proceeded with. It was proposed by Mr Bennett and seconded by Mr Wouldee, that the secretary write to the Auckland Education Board applying for a school, as there were now 26 children there who did not at present receive education.
Messrs Ruse, Bennett, Bell and Johnson were delegates to attend a public meeting in Kawhia to discuss the matter of establishing a coastal steamer service. '
It was unanimously agreed that Mr Lang, the member, be asked to visit the district. Mr Haylock proposed and Mr Wouldee seconded: “That the secretary write to the Minister of Lands, Commissioner of Crown Lande, Auckland, and the president bf the Auckland Chamber of Commerce,, drawing attention to'ths injustice' ths district, suffers owing to there being Bo many reserved sections, 1 which would be immediately taken dp if they were only available for selection.’' ' , , A vote of thanks to Mr Rose for, acting as chairman concluded the business. The next meeting is to be held about the end of April, the date which will be duly advertised in the ftontt.
