THE Kawhia Settler FRIDAY, JANUARY 20, 1905. TO THE PUBLIC
In resuming possession of tbe Kawhu Settler, it is our desire to rajse the tone of it to as high a standard as I’es in our pow-ar, and w trust that we will succeed. There can be nd disputing the face that a newspaper is a power which can be employed for either good or evil, and the influence of those conducting it should tend to the uplifting of the district —not only commercially, but morally and socially. Although at first it was our intention to start on co-operative lines, we found that there were many difficulties in the way ; but wo are confident that the present supporters of the Settler will recognise, that although not actually on the basis of a financial co- | operation, we intend to conduct our business in such a way as to show persons of every shade of opinion that we wish to co-operate with them in forwarding the district as a whole, and by being as unbiassed. as possible, to weigh fairly all that we have to deal with, and in such a manner that we will benofit the greatest number. Our aim will be to support the industries that exist, to encourage those that may be inaugurated in the future, and to advocate all that can be of help and good to the uistrict in general. We will try to make our reading matter of general interest to one and all.
All that we ask in return is that you will help us. A paper to be of benefit not only to the promoters but to the district in which it is published, requires a large circulation. Help us in this direction and you will be helping yourselves. Every new subscriber is another prop added to the superstructure and assists in establishing tbe organ which fights for you in the outside world. Every advertisement helps towards the improvement of the paper and tends to maKe if in tbe end rank high in the fourth estate. So we ask you to rally round. To those in the outlying districts we say : we know your wants and will do what we can as a newspaper to help you to get them supplied. Be with us and support us as we intend to support you.
We solicit contributions, to our columns, and would like our readers to bear well in mind the fact that the I columns of tbe Settler are always open to discuss matters of public interest. We should also feel obliged if intimation of any coming event of importance be forwarded to us, so that our reporter can be in attendance. We do not intend publishing yet tbe nature of tbe improvements that are contemplated, but our readers can rest assured that every effort will be made to bring the Settler up to a high standard of excellence. In conclusion, we solicit the hearty co-operation of residents of the district.
