PHILOMEL IN ACTION.
DEFENCE OF CANAL. THREE NEW ZEALANDERS KILLED. Wellington, Thursday. The naval authorities regret to announce the receipt of a telegram from the light cruiser Philomel, dated February Bth, reporting the following casualties William Stanbury, able seaman, killed in action. William Edward Knowles, seaman, died of wounds received in action. John Thomas More ton, died of wounds. Arthur E. J. Spi liar, slightly wounded. A. T. Liiiou, severely wounded. Samuel Campbell, slight woundH. Beyond the fact that the wounded are on hoard the H.M.s. Pilomel, no further details are giviin. Knowle's widow resides at Lvttelton and Moreton'a mother at Christchurch.
PATROL IN RED SEA
Greymouth, Thursday. A private letter received in Greymoutn from one of the New Zenlanders aboard, states that after convoying the troops to Egypt the Philomel had been all round India and was : afterwards put on patrol duty in the Red Sea. The letter was written at , Christmas time. The, writer then ex- ' pected to be in port off and on, thß cruiser being ten duys at sea and two ■ in port.
