MANGAPEHI.

Own Correspondent,

The district school reopened last week after the summer vacation, and despite the fact that some families have left the district over 70 children are now in attendance, and after a week's coming and going have once more settled down to the usual routine

The new and up-to-date accommodation house, erected a short time ago by Messrs Ellis and Burnand, has raised the tone of the settlement considerably from a picturesque point of view. At first occupied by Mr Butler, it is now being conducted by Mr and Mrs Koss, and travellers, visitors and the public generally can depend on getting comfortably housed while in Mangapehi.

At the local sawmill there are evidences that the timber industry is slowly recovering from the serious set-back sustained at the outbreak of the present European turmoil. After suffering for some months from the unreasonable panic that prevailed in financial affairs, slightly increased trade is being enjoyed. This is evidenced by the constant hissing of steam, and the merry humming of saws six days a week, and the daily sight of railway wagons loaded with timber being despatched to divers destinations.

A sharp shock of earthquake was experienced on Wednesday evening at about 10.30. Apart from one chimney reported as being cracked, no damage seems to have been sustained.
