THE BATTLE AT GIVENCHY.
GRAPHIC ACCOUNT BY EYEWITNESS. BRITISH USE BAYONET. London, Sunday. An eye witness' version of the fighting at Givenchy on the 25th January stages that the Germans attacked north and south of the canal.-, The former attack passed the British trenches, and gained a foothold in Givenchy, but aa it surged through the village the British met it with cold steel, killing hundreds of the Germans. The fighting at close quarters continued for several hours until the British re-ocupied the original trenches. The German losses wera very heavy, several scattered parties penetrating the British lines being practically annihilated. The British casualties were light. Meanwhile south of the canal a fierce struggle waged all day long. The British machine gunß swept the Germans advancing along the main road. The German dead littered the ground. Another force advancing along the railway suffered heavily from our machine guns, but managed to penetrate the British lines.
