HIGH COMMISSIONERS' CABLE.

The High Commissioner's market cablegram, dated London, January 23rd, ia as follows: — Mutton.—The market iB Bteady and fair business doing. Canterbury, sid; North Island, 5 7-16 d. Lamb.—The market is steady. Canterbury 6|d, supply running short. Other than Canterbury, this season's, 7d, best quality as high as 7£d; seconi grade 6|d. .Beef, —The market is firm and there is an increasing demand for better grades owing to the short supply of chilled. Hindquarters, 6 5-16 d; forequarters, sfd. Chilled, hinds 7§d; fores, s£d. Butter. —The market closed rather quiet, but a fair demand continues. Danish is quiet at from 150 a to 1545; New Zealand, 142 a to 1445, exceptional quality. 146; Autralian, 140s to 1445; Siberian, 13Gs to 138s; Argentine, 140s to 1445.

Cheese. —The market remains firm, with a good demand. The Canadian market is quiet but firm. White and coloured 84s to 86s. For New Zealand a good demand continues. White and coloured 82s to 83s; exceptional quality, 84s. English cheddar is firmer.

Wool. —The market is firm and prices are advancing. All merinos have gained Jd per lb since the opening of the sale.

Wheat. —The market is firm on account of a report from the Argentine that the weather there is too wet. Nominal quotations: Canadian, 58s, Argentine January s&ipment, 60s, excluding war risk. FAT STOCK SALES.

The Ne\y Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report: — At Westfield yards on Wednesday fat cattle came forward in extra large number, of nice quality, and owing to the freezing workß being completely blocked prices receded in value. Best oxr i sold to 39s 6d per 1001b, others 36. to 38s; cows and heifers 25s to 31 j per lOObl; steers sold at from £9 to £2l ss, and cows £4 to £10; heifers £3 15s to £9 10s. A drart of 20 steers from Mr F. W. Manning, Pipiroa Estate, averaged £l6. Veal calveß came forward in large numbers, and prices were lower than late sales. Heavy vealers £3 3s to £4 4s, medium-weights £2 to £2 15s, lighter 18s to 335, smaller 10s to 17s, freshdropped 2s lo Bs. Sheep were yarded in full supply, and showed no improvement in price. Best wethers sold at irom 20a 9d to 23s 9d, others 16s to 20s, heavy ewes 17s 6d to 18s 9d. Lambs in full supply. Best quality 15a to 18s 3d, others 10s 6d to 14s 6d, store do. 8s to 10s 3d. Pigs came forward in average numbers, and prices were better. No baconers yarded. Largs porkeSj £2 5s to £2 14s, porkers 30s to 425. slips 18s to 255. No Weaners yarded. Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report on their Johnsonville sale as follows: —A fair yardig of bullocks and sheep came forward and sold at late rates. Medium bullocks £l2 5s to £l3 ss, vealers 25s to 345, extra prime wethers 265, prime ewes 20s to 20s 6d, ilght 19s 6d to 21s, prime ewes 20s to 20s 6d, light ewes 18s 6d to 19s, prime lambs 16s 6d to 17s Id, others 13s 6d to 143 3d, prime shorn lambs 13s lOd to 14s. LONDON WOOL SALES. • The wool market is strong. All sorts are firm. Americans are operating ii? merinos. The following prices were realised for New Zealand clips:— Ngakonui, top 16d, average 15Jd; Piako, top 14£ d, average 14Jd.
