CONSULTING ENGINEER'S

REPORT.

LOAN PROPOSALS ADOPTED,

The extension of the electric light plant for the town has been before the Borough Council for some time, and the services of Mr F, Black, electrical engineer, of Wellington, have been engaged to furnish a report as to the best method of extending and improving the installation. Mr Black's report has come to hand, and was considered at a special meeting of the Council on Monday evening, when the following report was adopted: — . "That the electric light department ba charged 3d per 1000 gallons for water-used in the Power Station, until such time as tha Department is in a position to pay the ordinary charge; that L. Harper b9 given the position of shift engineer and his salary be increased to £2 lCs per weslc, and that W. Massey, of Waiuku, ba offered a position in the Power station at £2 per week; that after avery careful consideration of Mr Fredk. Black's report, and the whole position of the electric light department, the Committee cannot see its way clear to recommend to the Council the adoption of the reoort in its entirety, but recommend that steps be taken to procure an additional engine of 200 h.p., and that Mr Black be conferred with as to the most suitable Ipye of engine to inata' to meet the probable requirements of the electric light department for the next five yeara, and that immediate steps be taken to raise a loan of £6550 for the purpose of carrying the report into effect, and paying off the liabilities already incurred".' The various items of the proposed loan are: Suction producer, gas engine and dynamo, accessories*- foundations and erection, £3200; switchboard addition, £BS; enginesring and contingencies, ?£250; main improvements, £700; extension to mains, £438; . liabilities already incurred, £1577; interest, £300; making a total of £6550.

It was resolved on the motion of the Mayor and Cr Martin to take steps to raise the loan as soon as possible, and the necessary preliminary resolutions were passed.
