ROAD GRANT APPLICATION. At the meeting of tho Waitomo County Council, on Monday evening, Cr Were said he had heard rumours of alleged forgery in which the Council was Baid to he concerned, and ho had been referred to Cr Jackson as one who could throw light on the subject. Cr Jackson said as far a 8 ho was concerned the matter was hearsay. What he had heard was to the effect that an application was made by the settlers of Mairoa South for a Government grant of £IOOO and sent to the Council with a covering letter. When it came before the Council the amount was said to have bpen altered to £2OOO. He had been requestedfto take a solicitor's opinion about the matter, and was told that if the Council had done as waß suggested the councillors were c.ommmitting' forgery. Mr Scholes, chairman, said if any forgery had been committed it would have been by him, aa chairman, in forwarding the application. He could say emphatically th;it such a thing had not been done. He would not discuss the matter further than to say it waß utterly absurd to have sufh rumours circulated.
