THE POLITICAL SITUATION.

DU.NEDIN CENTRAL SEAT,

MR STATHAM RESIGNING,

Dunediir, Monday,

Mr Statham haß definitely decided" to and re-contost the Dunedin Central seat.

- The position in Dunedin Central is peculiar, as so fa>: os tlie voting wbb concerned, Mr Munro clearly won the eeat. The error of a deputy returning officer in marking a bundla of votta invalidated over a hundred, however, to Mr Statham's advantage and to the practical disfranchisement of the hundred odd electors. It is now Btated in reliable quarters that an appeal will be made against the holding of another election, together with a petition that Mr Munro bo declared elected for the seat. HAWKE'S BAY RECOUNT. DR McNAB'S MAJORITY INCREASED. Hastings, Monday. Tho official result of the magistetial recount of the votes cast in the Hawke's Bay election gives Dr McNab a majoriy of 40. The magistrate ruled that 39 of tho votes credited by the returning officer to Mr Campbell and eight to Dr McNab were informal. It is understood tbnt these votes have pencil marks through the Cfnietian name only of one of the candidates, whilst the name of the other candidate ia completely cancelled. It is almost certain that the ruling of the Supremo Cuurt vrill be taken oh the subject.
