THE ANGLERS ENEMY
The Editor
Sir, —Yesterday I was fortunate enough to shoot a tremendous eisecJ shag—or species of shag; Perhaps yon mayinform rae later what kind it really is. I have ta!;en the head and feet which 1 am forwarding to you for inspection. ~~Hia wings from tip to tip measured 4ft Sin. He had been about here for some time, but I haven't seen any like him before. This last eight years with young and old I have killed about 30 shaga all of which have been black or black and white in colour, and not much more than half the sizs of the one mentioned above. This should make a big difference to the fish in the Awakino river, which is a fine trout stream, though there ought to be more young fish put into it.—l am, OtC. j
3. C. TIIORESEN, Mahoenui, November 16th, 1914, (The specimens forwarded indicate that they formed pert of a very large bird, and one shich would do enormous damage in a trout stream They apparently belonged to an ordinary shag of extraordinary size, and h3va been forwarded to an authority for his opinion Wa are quite in agreement with our ' correspond ant' regarding the necessity for a further supply of young fish for the Awakino river end trust the Acclimatisation Society will take steps an soon as possible to further stock the stream. —Ed.
