A communique states the Germans violently bombarded Nieuport, Dixmude, and Ypre>. .The artillery preventelthe Germans from completing "works south of Dix mude to prevent the inundation of the trenches which Were flooded ar.d had to be evacuated. Garman attacks south of Bixschoote and Ypres failed. We.progressed between Bixschoote and the Yser Canal. The artillery contest at Armentieres and Tola Basse was particularly violent. The Germans endeavouring to cross the Aisne near Vailly wp*^-destroyed or repulsed. / In Areonne we explo- ' a number of German trenches b> meana of mines and advanced several position. South of Verdun we seized a portion of Chauvocour, which is the sole point held by the Germans on the loft banks of the Meuse in this reigon.
